Week beginning Monday 19th April-Topic Lessons

Are carrots orange?

Our focus for this week is supermarkets and the food inside them!

Virtual Supermarket Trip

In school we will be going on a supermarket trip. To make sure you don’t miss out, we’ve managed to find a virtual supermarket tour!

Watch the video below and explore the activities underneath. You do not need to watch all of the video!

  • Use your senses to investigate different types of food in your home.
  • If you can, read some of the labels, signs and prices.
  • Think about which food is healthy.
  • Draw pictures of foods you see that interest you.

Questions you could ask your child during the video or by looking at the food you have in your home:

  • What is this food called?
  • What do you notice about this food?
  • Does this food have a smell? Do you like it?
  • How does this food feel?
  • Is this a fruit, vegetable, meat or cereal?
  • Which animal does this meat come from?
  • What types of jobs do people do in a supermarket?

Music-Join in!

We’d like you to spend some time this week singing songs and reading poems all about food! See how many actions you can add to each poem or song.

Click here to have a go at reading popular rhymes together such as:

  • One Potato Two Potato
  • Five Currant Buns
  • Ten Fat Sausages

You might want to focus on a new poem or song each day.

The Muffin Man
I am the baker man
The Magic Porridge Pot

Shopping Role Play

Have a look around your home for different items you can get in the supermarket. This could also include empty boxes or packaging.

Role play with your adults or siblings as if you are really in the supermarket! Are there any offers? How are they paying today? What are they looking for?

Create a checkout by using cardboard or simply by setting up a space for a checkout. You could also make your own coins, notes or cards! If you like, you can print some of the signs and items below or draw your own.

Don’t Forget the Bacon!

Listen the story below and complete the task underneath.

Have a look at the items below. If you can, print off the items and cut them out, draw your own or simply point to the right items in the picture underneath.

Which of the items did Mum want from the shops?

Which are the items the boy thinks Mum wants?
