Year 4 Monday 16th November

Watch today’s welcome video here!

Good morning Year 4! Hope you’ve had a fun and relaxed weekend! Thank you for coming on to virtual school today. Miss Furlong and Miss Aluriya would like you to log in into virtual school every day to access the learning. It is crucial that we maintain a routine that is as close as possible to a normal school day during the next two weeks. New learning will be available each weekday and we ask that you leave us a comment (questions or messages) you have for your teacher. These will be answered daily so don’t hesitate to comment should you need any support or just want to check-in. Any work that you do, remember to tweet it @hillstoneps. Most importantly, make sure to stay safe! Have a great day!

9:00-9:10

Let’s the start the day off with some early morning work! So, put your thinking hats on Year 4. Below is a picture of several things combined together – a couple of Maths, Geography, English questions, etc. These questions might be topics we may have not covered in lessons yet but that’s okay! Just give it a good go – you might learn something new! Again, if you need any support, please comment below. Make sure you have left a comment to let us know you’re here too!

9:10-10:00

Today we are starting a new piece of writing. It’s based on a true Indian story! Does anybody know any Indian stories? Can you name them?

Read this letter below that we have received from a young British Indian girl.

Dear Year 4,

My name is Aisha Sharma and I live in Birmingham just like you! My brother and I were born in England but our parents were born in India’s capital Delhi. Excitingly, our parents are taking us to Delhi in the summer so we can see where they were born, learn about Indian culture and experience all the wonder that this beautiful country has to offer. I am so excited; I will meet my grandparents for the first time! They have just moved to a small village next to the Ganges, North of Delhi near the magnificent Himalayas and Nepal. Miss Furlong and Miss Aluriya told me about your new topic and all the fantastic things you have asked to learn about.

I want to find out as music as I can before I go to my parent’s motherland and wondered if you could tell me all about it? From Indian culture and art, it’s geography, music and dance and the stunning festival of Diwali. Every Diwali my Nanni used to read the story of Rama and Sita to my mom. Could you enjoy the story and then write a review of it for me so I can learn about this wonderful festival of light?

Namaste,

Aisha.

This week, to write a review on the story of Rama and Sita, you will need to read it first! Here’s a link to the story!

  • What is the story about?
  • Who are the characters?
  • What festival is the story connected to?
  • How were Hanuman and Rama able to defeat Ravana?
  • How does working as a team help us?

Your task – can we act out the story? Make some notes (bullet points) on the following:

  • What happens in the story? Remember to write it in chronological order (1st, 2nd, etc).
  • How did the story end?

Have you entered the writing competition yet?! Look out for the full details on the main year 4 virtual classroom.

10:10-11:00

This week we are reading a new story – ‘The Jungle Book’.

  • What do you already know about the book?
  • Who are the characters?
  • Who wrote it?
  • What happens?

Did you know that India was regarded as part of the British Empire at the time of writing and that many people would be interested in the stories because they provided a ‘view’ of life there. If you haven’t read it, how realistic do you anticipate the story will be?

What do you see? What do you think the story will be about? What characters have you identified? Notice the features – the front cover, font and colours.

What about the blurb? What impressions do you notice of the tiger from this image alone?

Your task – Read the story.

Write down any words you don’t know the meaning of. Use a dictionary to find out the meaning. You can find an online dictionary here.

Pick one word and complete a square vocabulary sheet.

11:00-11:10

Grab a piece of fruit for snack and watch Newsround with us!

11:10-12:00

We are starting our week off by continuing to practise our multiplication and division skills. Today we are going to be revising fact families. If we know 1 fact about a set of numbers, then we also know 3 more. For example, if I know:

We can put these numbers in to a number family triangle like this:

Task 1: Fill in the 4 number sentences you know from each of the triangles on the sheet below. You don’t have to print the sheet off, you can fill in the answers on any piece of paper you have at home.

Task 2: Watch the first 3 minutes of this video of a teacher showing fact families with an array.

Can you make an array like she does at home and write down what the 4 multiplication and division facts are that relate to it? Choose a different times table fact to 3 x 4 = 12. You don’t have to use blocks, you could use lego, grapes, small dolls or any other small objects that you’ve got in your house. Here is an example:

Task 3: Watch the video on this page: https://www.bbc.co.uk/teach/supermovers/ks2-maths-the-12-times-table-with-chirpy-cockerel/z7v7rj6. Join in with the dance moves and singing!

12:00-12:10

Spend some time on TT Rock Stars. At 12:00 Miss Furlong will post the name for the arena mode room to join if you want to play a game at the same time as her and other year 4 children. Check back here and the comments section at 12:00 for more details!

12:10-12:30

Read your AR book. When you are finished, you can take your quiz on Accelerated Reader. You can login here. Any problems, (for example, if you can’t remember your login details) just leave us a comment at the bottom of the page.

Click HERE to visit an online reading website. Select any story you would like to hear and click on ‘Youtube’ (so that you can view and listen to the story through Youtube). Don’t forget to let us know what stories you are reading/have read in the comments below!

13:30-13:40

13:40 – 15:00

This afternoon’s activity is topic. Here is your task:

  1. Take a look at India’s tourist website here. Look at the ‘places you need to visit in India’ section. Choose 2 or 3 and try to find out some more information about each of them. Write down a few notes, e.g. where they are, what you can do there, why people would want to visit.
  2. Use what you have found out and other knowledge you have of India to make a tourist leaflet. (If you remember, we made something very similar at the end of our ancient Egypt topic!). You could draw and write on paper or use an IT programme like word to make your leaflet. Below are some ideas for what you might make.

Miss Aluriya made some Indo-Chinese food! Want to try it? Here’s a video that I have created so you can do the same! Don’t forget to get an adult to help you! Looking forward to see how you’ve got on with your cooking session.

Visit the year 4 topic page for more ideas of topic, music, art, PE and wellbeing activities.

    1. Lots of children in 4A have made it to virtual school – so well done for that! Particularly, I’m impressed with Nancy for her enthusiasm in her work this morning. Also, Olivia for completing all of the work that was set. Let’s see who can impress us in the afternoon.
