Good morning Year 4! Thank you for coming on to virtual school today. Miss Furlong and Miss Aluriya would like you to log in into virtual school every day to access the learning. It is crucial that we maintain a routine that is as close as possible to a normal school day during the next two weeks. New learning will be available each weekday and we ask that you leave us a comment (questions or messages) you have for your teacher. These will be answered daily so don’t hesitate to comment should you need any support or just want to check-in. Any work that you do, remember to tweet it @hillstoneps. Most importantly, make sure to stay safe! Have a great day!
9:00-9:10

Let’s start the day off with some early morning work! So, put your thinking hats on Year 4. Below is a picture of several things combined together – a couple of Maths, Geography, English questions, etc. These questions might be topics we may have not covered in lessons yet but that’s okay! Just give it a good go – you might learn something new! Again, if you need any support, please comment below. Make sure you have left a comment to let us know you’re here too!

9:10-10:00

To write a review of a story, we need to know what makes a good review! So, what does make a good review? Leave a comment below to let us know what you think!
Task 1 – Read a model text of a review ‘Leon and the Place Between’.

Task 2 – Identify the features of this review. Use a highlighter, coloured pencil or different coloured pens to represent the different features in the review. Don’t forget to make a key like we normally do in our writing lessons! I have suggested a few features of a review to get you started. The key below is just an example! Remember to ask for help, should you need any in the comments box!
Key
Orange – Title
Yellow – Likes
Blue – Dislikes
Pink – Rhetorical questions
Red – Past tense
Task 3 – Think about what did you like about the story ‘Rama and Sita’. Below is a book review page. The first box is about what you liked about the story. Today, we are only completing the first box! Remember to provide reasons for why you liked a particular part of a story! I have attached a copy of this review below if you prefer to print it out.

Example 1 of a review (just the likes section) – A really, really long time ago there was some people in India. I liked the beginning of this story because it was interesting. I also liked the character of Prince Rama because he was strong and he was going to become king and he was kind. I liked the bit where he saved her from the demon. I learned lots from this story.
Is this a good example of a review? Why?
Example 2 of a review (just the likes section) – The story of Prince Rama and Princess Sita is a timeless classic showing the triumph of good over evil. Interestingly, one of the main things I really enjoyed was the clever way that Princess Sita used her precious jewellery like a breadcrumb trail, in order for her husband (Prince Rama) to find her after she had been kidnapped by the monstrous demon king Ravana.
Especially, I liked the exciting part when the young prince enlisted the help of the kind monkey King Hanuman. Overall, this piece of the story showed great respect between the two rulers in the fight against evil.
Is this a good example of a review? Why?
Have you entered the writing competition yet?! Look out for the full details on the main year 4 virtual classroom.
10:10-11:00

This week we are reading the story of ‘The Jungle Book’. Lesson 2
Task 1 – Recap the main events of the story. Have the story in front of you and skim through the story to remind you of what happened.
- What do you already know about the book?
- Who are the characters?
- Who wrote it?
- What happens?
We are familiar with watching Jungle Book as a film on Television or at the cinema and there have been several versions. Like many films, it started off as a book by an English man who had been born in India.
What does ‘descriptive language’ and ‘figurative language’ mean?

Task 2 – In the screenshots below, can you find any examples of descriptive and figurative language in the text?

Task 3 – Complete the table below. I have attached a word document of the grid below if you wish to print it off.

11:00-11:10

Grab a piece of fruit for snack and watch Newsround with us!
11:10-12:00

Watch the video below for today’s maths lesson.
Task 1

Task 2

There are 2 going deeper challenges today. Have a look at each one below. Let us know in the comments what you think the answers might be!

12:00-12:10

Spend some time on TT Rock Stars. At 12:00 Miss Furlong will post the name for the arena mode room to join if you want to play a game at the same time as her and other year 4 children. Check back here and the comments section at 12:00 for more details!
12:10-12:30
Read your AR book. When you are finished, you can take your quiz on Accelerated Reader. You can login here. Any problems, (for example, if you can’t remember your login details) just leave us a comment at the bottom of the page.
Click HERE to visit an online reading website. Select any story you would like to hear and click on ‘Youtube’ (so that you can view and listen to the story through Youtube). Don’t forget to let us know what stories you are reading/have read in the comments below!
13:30-13:40

Rachael and Mia chose our poems for today. You can find me reading Rachael’s poem below, which is called ‘What can you do with a football?’
Mia’s poem is a poem called ‘People need people’ by Benjamin Zephaniah, who lots of you might already have heard of. This poem fits in very well with our current situation so instead of me reading it, I thought I’d find a video of Benjamin Zephaniah himself reading it. He does a much better job than I ever could!
Remember to tell us whether you like them and why/why not in the comments! If you would like to pick the poem for tomorrow, tell me a page number between 1 and 270! I will choose the first 2 people who comment.
13:40 – 15:00
We are having a musical afternoon today! There are 2 tasks we’d like you to complete.
Task 1: Spend some time on ‘Bring the Noise’ – a BBC game that lets you create your own music. If you take a video of yourself using the game, you can also use this as evidence to apply for your Blue Peter music badge (designed by Ed Sheeran!). More details can be found here.
Task 2: It is time to start preparing for Christmas at Hillstone! Some events will be a bit different this year but Mr Farr is already hard at work putting some special things together. However, he needs a little help! Every year group is going to be performing a Christmas song. Our song is ‘We Three Kings’ and Mr Farr will be coming to film us singing when we go back to school so we need to make sure we are ready! This afternoon I’d like you to listen to the song and start to practise it.

Visit the year 4 topic page for more ideas of topic, music, art, PE and wellbeing activities.
