Year 2 Topic Page WB:18.01.21

Welcome to our topic page for this week. We have lots of exciting activities for you to complete! To start the week, we will be finding out about the Queen’s family. You are going to explore her family tree and order her family based on the year that they were born. This will lay the foundations for our future work on timelines. You are going to be using Google Earth to locate the Queen’s different homes and then recreating one of her homes during one of our art lessons. We are also going to be creating some royal bunting to decorate our classrooms when we return to school. Our Hillstone Lifeskills lesson will focus on being kind to the people that we live with. You also have two PE lessons to enjoy as well as music and drama. We understand that this is a very difficult time for everyone and we will be finishing the week with a story called ‘While we can’t hug’.

Monday-History

Today, we are going to be finding out about the Queen’s family. You have two different activities to complete.

Activity one- Let’s meet the royal family!

Below is a picture of Queen Elizabeth II’s family tree. On this family tree, the red lines mean that the two people are or were married. The yellow lines connect parents with their children. I can see that Queen Elizabeth II is married to Prince Philip because there is a red line between them. I can also see that Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip have a child called Prince Charles. Can you answer the following questions using the family tree to help you?

  1. Prince Charles has been married twice. Who has he been married to?
  2. Who are Prince Harry’s parents?
  3. What are the names of Prince William’s and Catherine’s children?
  4. Who are Archie’s parents?
  5. Who is the only adult to not have any royal children on the family tree?

Activity two- Sorting members of the royal family by the date that they were born.

We are now going to complete our main activity. We are going to be using the family tree below and this time each family member has a year below their name. This is the year that they were born. So, Queen Elizabeth II was born in 1926. You are going to be putting some of the family members in order based on which year they were born in. The oldest person will come first and the youngest person will come last. This activity will support you with our future work on timelines. Watch the video first for a demonstration of how to complete this activity.

Place these family members in order of their birth from oldest to youngest.

  1. Queen Elizabeth, Prince Philip, Prince Charles.
  2. Diana, Catherine, Megan.
  3. William, Harry, Camilla.
  4. Louis, Archie, Charlotte.

Challenge

Place these four people in the order of their birth starting with the youngest.

Queen Elizabeth II, Archie, Prince George, Princess Diana.

Tuesday: Lesson One- Hillstone Lifeskills

I absolutely loved that story! I can’t believe that I have had an invisible bucket all of this time and I didn’t even know! I am going to be working incredibly hard from now on to fill my own and other people’s buckets. I started to work on this yesterday and I have taken photographs showing the different ways that I have tried to fill the buckets of my family. There are some pictures below of what I have done so far. Your task is to try and fill the buckets of the other people that you live with. You could say kind things, do something helpful or even just give somebody a smile. Show us how you have filled somebody else’s bucket. You could take photographs like I have or make a list of the things that you have done.

I gave lots of cuddles to my family.
I gave kissies to my puppy.
I gave lots of smiles to everyone that I live with.
I shared my sweets with my family.
I left thoughtful notes around the house.

Wednesday: Lesson One- Geography

Today, you are going to be exploring the Queen’s homes using GoogleEarth. This is one of my favourite types of map because you can see things as if you are up in the sky looking down. In the search bar you just need to type the name of the home that you wish to see and GoogleEarth will take you there! Your task is to find out which part of the UK her different homes are in. When you have found one of her homes an information box will pop up on the side of the screen. If you click ‘more information’ you will be able to see some photographs of that particular home. Below are the names of her different homes that we would like you to find. Have fun exploring!

Buckingham Palace

Balmoral Castle

Sandringham Estate

Windsor Castle

Hillsborough Castle

Holyrood Palace

Wednesday: Lesson Two-Art

Now you have found out a bit more about the Queen’s homes, it’s time to get arty! You need to choose one of her homes to re-create. You could complete a sketch of one of her homes including all of the details. Alternatively, you could create a 3D model of one her homes using any boxes that you may have at home. You could even create one of her homes using Lego! Below are some ideas if you need a little inspiration.

Below is a simple step-by-step guide for how to draw Buckingham Palace if you would like to complete an extra activity today. Remember that you can pause the video at any time.

Thursday Lesson One: Art and design

Today, we would like you to create some royal bunting for our classrooms. We are going to be continuing with our topic ‘The Best of Britain’ until Easter and it would be lovely if we could decorate our classroom, with the lovely bunting you create, when you are all able to return to school! We want you to think really carefully about the design that you are going to use for your bunting. The theme is either ‘The Queen’ or the ‘UK’ so we don’t just want you to colour in triangles in one colour. Below are some examples of bunting.

This bunting has pictures of corgis on it. This is the Queen’s favourite type of dog!

To create your bunting, cut triangle shapes out of plain paper and then decorate. You could use felt tips, pencils crayons or paint to create your design. You may decide to make one special piece of bunting or several pieces. If you have any string at home you may want to attach your bunting pieces together. Remember that to attach your bunting to string you will need to be able to fold the top of your bunting triangles over the string (see the picture below).

If you have lots of time, you may decide to make your bunting out of fabric and sew them together. You will need an adult to help you with this. Please send us a picture of your gorgeous bunting once you have finished!

While we Can’t Hug

We know that things are really difficult right now especially because we can’t see all of our family and friends. Listen to the story below and let’s think of some ways that we can show our family and friends that we are thinking of them.
