Good morning Year 4! Miss Furlong and Miss Aluriya are both very happy to see you on virtual school. Please make sure you are keeping up with your school work by completing the lessons and activities that we have set for you today. We will be keeping a register so make sure you leave a comment to let us know that you’re here. We would love to see the work that you complete too. There are 3 ways you can send us work:
1) Tweet it @hillstoneps
2) Email it to year4@hillstone.org.uk
3) Submit it here
Please make sure your name is on any photos that you send us.
Most importantly, make sure to stay safe! Have a great day!

Do you have somewhere to write…?

Before you start, we know we’re going to be away from school for a little while, so it would be a good idea to make sure you have a place to keep all of your virtual school work. Your homework book would be ideal to use. If you don’t have access to this (for example, you’ve left it at school), you could find another notebook that is only used for school work. Try to keep this book nice and neat just like you would with your learning and maths journals.

9:00-9:10

Let’s start the day off with some early morning work! So, put your thinking hats on Year 4. Below is a picture of several things combined together – a couple of Maths, Geography, English questions, etc. These questions might be topics we may have not covered in lessons yet but that’s okay! Just give it a good go – you might learn something new! Again, if you need any support, please comment below. Make sure you have left a comment to let us know you’re here too!

Our new topic this term is ‘Light and Sound’.

Who is this person in the picture? Comment below!

How do you think this is related to our topic of ‘Light and Sound’?

Task 1 – Watch the video of Grace Darling below. You can jot important notes down into your book.

Discussion –

  • Where was Grace Darling born?
  • When was Grace Darling born?
  • Who was Queen at the time of Grace Darling’s rescue?
  • Consider how attitudes to young women have changed since Victorian times.
  • How do you think Grace was treated by newspapers and the Victorian public?
  • Do you think she would be treated the same way today?

Your task for this lesson is to write a diary entry as if you are Grace Darling.

Checklist:

  • Start with ‘Dear diary,’
  • Describe the place where the event happened.
  • Write in the past tense.
  • Use the pronouns like ‘I’, ‘me’ and ‘my’.
  • Talk about how you were feeling or what you were thinking when each event happened.

A model diary entry is uploaded below. Remember it is only there for inspiration or guidance. You can also use the word mat to help you get started.

In topic today we are going to be learning about electricity.
What do you already know about electricity? Write down any facts you know in your book.

Task 1: Have a play on this website. As you’re looking, can you find the answers to these questions?
1. Where does electricity come from?
2. How does electricity get from a power station to your house?
3. Where does solar power come from?

To make something work with electricity, for example to turn a lamp on, you have to use a circuit. Watch this video below to find out what a circuit is and how one works.

Finally, take part in this lesson on Oak National Academy. Make sure you complete the quiz to find out how much you have learned this afternoon.

  1. miss i enjoyed our schooling today , all my work is in a book too bring too school when we are back , i really loved the topic on electric too ,

    1. Wow Gabe. You’ve done really well with your diary entry. Here’s some feedback for you: remember to start with ‘Dear diary,’. I liked how you described the ‘cries’. The last two sentences start with ‘because’. Remember ‘because’ is a conjunction to join two sentences together. How else can we start the sentence rather than using ‘because’. Overall Gabe, it was a very good diary entry! πŸ™‚ Keep working hard! A Marvellous Me badge coming your way πŸ™‚

    1. It’s a part whole model question. Try looking at your question from the right-hand angle. So, the full fraction is 6/9 and a part of it has been provided for you – 1/9. If you take that away from 6/9 you will have 5/9 left. We can then use this information to complete the second part-whole model. 5/9 – 2/9 leaves us with 3/9. Let me know how you get on with it Gabe

  2. Good morning Year 4 πŸ™‚ Hope you’ve had a good weekend. Remember to comment in the comments box to let me know that you are here on Virtual School. Enjoy your day! πŸ™‚

    1. Good morning Adam πŸ™‚ Yes, unfortunately, the video isn’t working today. I have tried 3 times uploading it. Have a look at the timetable at the top of the page and you should know what you are doing.
