Year 4 Thursday 7th January

Good morning Year 4! Miss Furlong and Miss Aluriya are both very happy to see you on virtual school. Please make sure you are keeping up with your school work by completing the lessons and activities that we have set for you today. We will be keeping a register so make sure you leave a comment to let us know that you’re here. We would love to see the work that you complete too. There are 3 ways you can send us work:
1) Tweet it @hillstoneps
2) Email it to year4@hillstone.org.uk
3) Submit it here
Please make sure your name is on any photos that you send us.
Most importantly, make sure to stay safe! Have a great day!

Do you have somewhere to write…?

Before you start, we know we’re going to be away from school for a little while, so it would be a good idea to make sure you have a place to keep all of your virtual school work. Your homework book would be ideal to use. If you don’t have access to this (for example, you’ve left it at school), you could find another notebook that is only used for school work. Try to keep this book nice and neat just like you would with your learning and maths journals.

9:00-9:10

Let’s start the day off with some early morning work! So, put your thinking hats on Year 4. Below is a picture of several things combined together – a couple of Maths, Geography, English questions, etc. These questions might be topics we may have not covered in lessons yet but that’s okay! Just give it a good go – you might learn something new! Again, if you need any support, please comment below. Make sure you have left a comment to let us know you’re here too!

9:10-10:00

We’re continuing to look at graphs today. If you missed yesterday’s maths lesson on bar graphs, it will be a good idea to go back and do that one first, otherwise you might find today’s work a little bit hard!
Today we are learning about line graphs.

Task 1

Click HERE and watch the two videos on the page. They will introduce you to line graphs and teach you how to find out information from them.

Task 2 – Guided Practice

Have a look at the graph below:

Use the graph to answer these questions:

  1. What was the temperature at 11am?
  2. What was the temperature at 1pm?
  3. What was the temperature at 2.30pm?
  4. At what time was it the warmest inside the house?
  5. At what time was the temperature 21 C?

Workbook

There are 3 workbook pages to complete below. Click on each one to make it bigger.

Only answer questions a and b
There are no questions on this page but you need the information for page 3.

Use the graphs from page 2 to fill in the table and answer the questions.

Answers

Finally, it is important that you send us photos of any of the work you do. We will be sending Marvellous Me badges out to everybody who sends us work! Submit your work here or send it to year4@hillstone.org.uk.

10:10-11:00

This week we are reading the story of ‘How Does A Lighthouse Work?’

I have read the pages attached above in a video too if you prefer listening to the story.

What is a lighthouse for? Refer back to your predictions from the last lesson. Check if they were right?

Vocabulary development – Do you think you know the meaning to these words below?

Re-read the pages attached above to understand the words better.

Your next task is to complete this table below.

11:00-11:10

Grab a piece of fruit for snack and watch Newsround with us!

11:10-12:00

Our new topic this term is ‘Light and Sound’. We are going to be writing a newspaper report on a short film ‘Lighthouse’.

Your first task – I have attached some headlines from a newspaper report below. There are also some writing features listed below. You need to match the two together.

Second task – In the boxes below, some information has been provided from an incident. You need to work out which of the 5Ws are used. Not all of the Ws may be covered.

  • Who
  • What
  • Where
  • Why
  • When

What are the main points of the lighthouse story? What do we need the reader to know?

Write your own headline for your newspaper report.

12:10-12:30

Read your AR book. When you are finished, you can take your quiz on Accelerated Reader. You can login here. Any problems, (for example, if you can’t remember your login details) just leave us a comment at the bottom of the page.

Click HERE to visit an online reading website. Select any story you would like to hear and click on ‘Youtube’ (so that you can view and listen to the story through Youtube). Don’t forget to let us know what stories you are reading/have read in the comments below!

13:30-13:40

I have attached the Oxford Owl website to this page for you to choose a story of your choice. You will need to log in using the username – Hillstone 1 and Password – Hello through the student account. Remember to let me know what stories you have been reading in the comments box below.

13:40 – 14:00

Time for some Arithmetic!

In the next video, I am going to dictate some questions to you and you have a certain amount of time to answer them! Marvellous Me badges will be given to those who get them all right! I have also attached the questions below.

If there are any questions that you have that are incorrect, please check where you went wrong using my answer sheet above.

14:00 – 15:00
