Year 5 Friday 8th January

Good morning Year 5! Welcome to all 5U and 5K pupils. Thank you for coming on to virtual school today. We would like you to log into virtual school every day to access the learning. It is crucial that we maintain a routine that is as close as possible to a normal school day during the next two weeks. New learning will be available each weekday. Don’t hesitate to ask if you need any support or just want to check-in. Remember to tweet your work @hillstoneps. Make sure you leave a comment every day so we know you’re here (each day’s comments section will be used to take a register). Most importantly, make sure to stay safe! Have a great day!

Fantastic news! You can now send your work to us for feedback by uploading it here. Additionally, if you have any questions that you’d prefer to ask your teacher privately, send them to year5@hillstone.org.uk

A special mention goes to Scarlett Thornton for the range of work she uploaded on Thursday.

You can download the text to read along below and also the resources with the questions to answer.

Reading for Everyone Else

Earlier this week, we looked at ‘Peter and the Wolf’, which is a story with Russian origins. Below is a copy of the story so that you are familiar with it.

Today, you will summarise the story. This is a good skills to have, as it shows that you can pick out the main points of what is happening.

Here are 2 examples of what a story map could look like.

Music

Listen to – Wintergatan – Marble Machine (music instrument using 2000 marbles)

The Derbyshire Music Hub is where we can enjoy a variety of music lessons that you can engage with at home.

RimbaTubes – Snubby J Star Wars Medley

Street artist playing crystal glasses

This weeks lesson is split into 2 parts:-

Listening to music

Answer the following questions about the piece of music you chose. You can either write this down, or discuss with your family.

  • 1. Describe the instrument being played. What shape and size is it?
    2. Describe the materials used to make this instrument
    3. How do you think it makes a sound? Can you work what the performer does to create this sound?
    4. How did this music make you feel? Choose an emoji if you’d like!

2. Creating music

It’s time to make a kitchen utensil band! First, make sure the adults in the house are OK with this, and maybe even get them to join in too.

  • Find some suitable items from the kitchen that you think will make some good sounds… like a saucepan, spoon, ladle, spatula, whisk etc.
  • Using a grid separated into four beats, make a graphic score showing when each sound is going to be made.

We’ve prepared an example for you, and you can download this, as well as a template grid to print at home here

Try playing each part, then with the help of others in the house, all the parts together.

French

This half term we will be looking at the French term (Je Peux) which means – I can.

Here I give the pronunciations for some French ‘I can’ phrases and your job is to make them to the pictures below.

Now complete the page of work matching the spellings/phrases to the pictures.
