Good morning Year 5! Welcome to all 5U and 5K pupils. Thank you for coming on to virtual school today. We would like you to log into virtual school every day to access the learning. It is crucial that we maintain a routine that is as close as possible to a normal school day during the next two weeks. New learning will be available each weekday. Don’t hesitate to ask if you need any support or just want to check-in. Remember to tweet your work @hillstoneps. Make sure you leave a comment every day so we know you’re here (each day’s comments section will be used to take a register). Most importantly, make sure to stay safe! Have a great day!

Today’s lesson
While scanning our solar system to produce his fact file for NASA, Ross discovered a strange message. Ross believes the message has been sent back in time from the future!
A time stamp on the message suggests it was created in the year 2150. In 2150, it seems life on Earth is very different and humanity is facing serious problems.
One of the key issues is that Earth’s natural resources have almost been depleted.
Humans have been forced to travel to other planets in order to find new resources.
In the Alpha Centauri system, the solar system closest to our own, the gas giant Polyphemus has a moon called Pandora.
The message from the future contains details about the moon. Watch the video twice and make notes. Once you’ve finished, watch my Pandora quiz at the bottom of today’s writing section. If you don’t know the answers, watch the Pandora video again and see if you can add more detail to your notes.
Quiz time!
Pause the video after each question to give yourself enough time to respond. Make sure you can see your notes.
Good luck!! Remember to share a photo of your work using twitter or the Year 5 upload link at the top of the page.

Sikhism (The Gurdwara)
In the video below Simran explains that the word ‘Gurdwara’ means the ‘home of the Guru’, or the ‘door to the Guru’.
She describes what happens at the Gurdware and the many symbols of respect they show when they are there. These include: taking off your shoes, washing your hands, covering your head, sitting down on the floor to eat, expressing equality through sharing food without taking notice of differences of gender, wealth, age or any other differences.
Simran explains that every Gurdwara has a kitchen – the famous ‘Langar’ – where anyone can eat; so long as they are willing to eat with everyone else. This helps to feed the poor and needy – and to challenge the wealthy and proud. Some Sikhs even take langar onto the streets as well to feed the homeless.
Simran has a go at helping to make food for everyone, but her skills are not perfect yet. Still, it is the intention that matters!
Click to watch this BBC video about the Sikh Gurdwara or on the picture below.
The Sikh place of worship is the Gurdwara meaning
‘doorway to the Guru’ or ‘the house of God’. Outside is the flag, the Nishan Sahib, the symbol of Sikhism.
Inside the Gurdwara is the Darbar Sahib, the prayer hall where the Guru Granth Sahib is placed. Before entering the prayer hall, all visitors remove their shoes and wear a head covering.
The sacred scriptures are placed on a manji (a raised dais). When not in use it is covered with rumallahs (special cloth). A fan (chauri), traditionally made from yak hair, is waved over the scriptures as a symbol of authority. A canopy (chanani) covers the raised dais. Inside the Gurdwara there is also a bedroom where the sacred scriptures are laid to rest at night. There is a langar (kitchen) which is seen as a dimension of Sikh worship. The Granthi is the senior religious figure in the Gurdwara and sits at the front by the holy scriptures. There is also a raised platform for the musicians to sit on and play.

Laika
They wanted to know if humankind would be able to survive in space.
Laika felt alone because she had nobody actually there.
The rocket could have exploded or hit a meteorite.
The black represents that Laika has gone out of our galaxy and she might die.
Mom has sent my writing, maths and early morning work to you.

Good morning
Had a great weekend, we watched Harry Potter and the half blood Prince! And I made lots of crafts for my mom’s. I saved 10% of my pocket money since last mothers day and treated us all to deserts for mothers day!!
How was your weekend?
Good morning. You really had a fantastically busy weekend. I think it was very thoughtful and kind of you to treat everyone. My weekend wasn’t as eventful. I have had to stay at home and rest whilst I recover from surgery.
Oh gosh. I hope you are OK xx
