Year 5 Monday 30th November

Good morning Year 5! Welcome to all 5U and 5K pupils. Thank you for coming on to virtual school today. We would like you to log into virtual school every day to access the learning. It is crucial that we maintain a routine that is as close as possible to a normal school day during the next two weeks. New learning will be available each weekday. Don’t hesitate to ask if you need any support or just want to check-in. Remember to tweet your work @hillstoneps. Make sure you leave a comment every day so we know you’re here (each day’s comments section will be used to take a register). Most importantly, make sure to stay safe! Have a great day!

Fantastic news! You can now send your work to us for feedback by uploading it here. Additionally, if you have any questions that you’d prefer to ask your teacher privately, send them to year5@hillstone.org.uk

Christmas is a wonderful time of year that is filled with joy. What are some of your favourite things about the celebration?

Unfortunately, not everyone is able to enjoy Christmas as we do. Christmas is often a sad time for the elderly. Why do you think this is the case?

Nearly half of the UK’s elderly feel that Christmas isn’t a special time for them anymore. They often don’t see or hear from anyone for days and days over the festive period because family members are too busy with preparations for Christmas or because they have forgotten about them. This year, many families will be staying away from elderly relatives to prevent the spread of Covid-19.

To do some thing about this, we had the idea to write special Christmas letters to the elderly. This will prove to them that they are still respected and valued and that the community hasn’t forgotten about them.

As we see on a daily basis, Newsround love to hear about what children are doing to help out in their communities. Why not kick start the project by sending a to Newsround to explain what we are going to do? This could inspire other children to help out the elderly in their communities too!

Take a look at the model of a persuasive letter. This letter was written for a very different purpose, but there are still lessons we can learn from it.

Read the letter bellow and then highlight or underline vocabulary and language features that may be useful when we come to write our own letters.

When you’ve finished, listen to my analysis videos and see if there’s anything you need to add or make note of.

We’re not writing our letters today! We have some more work to do tomorrow to help us prepare.

The Human Body

To explore the function of the kidneys

The kidneys are essentially washing machines for the blood. They process waste and toxins in the blood so it can be removed from the body in the form of urine.

The kidneys are a similar size to a computer mouse and they are located in the lower back. Put your hands where you think your kidneys are.

Kidneys need a great deal of blood (to supply oxygen and nutrients) in order to function. Blood flow to the kidneys is higher than it is to the heart, liver or brain!

The kidneys are capable of activating vitamin D.

Vitamin D is extremely important for several reasons:

Vitamin D helps our bones to absorb and store calcium. Why to you think this is important?

Additionally, vitamin D helps to support the immune system. Can you explain what the role of the immune system?

What happens if the kidneys stop working?

If your kidneys stop working, your body gradually fills with extra water and waste products. This makes you feel tired and weak because your body needs clean blood to function properly.

Additionally, feet and hands sometimes swell as a result of the excess water.

Your task

Your task this afternoon is to write a personal profile for a kidney that could be used on social media. You need to explain:

Where you are located and your size

What your job is

What would happen to the body if you decided to quit

You should also include a profile picture.

Remember to upload your work when it’s done!

  1. Hi, Emmy has worked really hard on completing all lessons today. She particularly liked the maths and learning about the kidneys. I will upload the topic work now. She has moved onto a book from home called Mr Stink by David Walliams for her AR book , she hopefully will do the quiz before coming back on Wednesday.

  2. Mom has put my kidney work on the cloud….. I loved learning about them. I have started watching operation ouch on TV which is great too..

    1. There will be detailed work tomorrow (how it has been for the last two weeks) and then for as long as 5K are isolating as well.
After that there will be a skeleton frame work of activities as children will be back in school. If you look on the Virtual School on some of the previous weeks it will give you a clue. Saying that Scarlett could always go back and look at some of the previous weeks learning for consolidation as well.

    1. I’ve had a look Scarlett and you seem to be confusing area with perimeter.
For perimeter you add length + width + length + width.
But for area you times length by width (only once though).

  3. Belle has done the maths. She really enjoyed it and I have loaded to the cloud. For writing we have started looking for some statistics and how to set out the letter… She has done some ttrs and the reading with questions. Just stopped for lunch and then we are working on topic.

  4. We analysed the letter together and then Jasmine was desperate to write a letter. I figured as she is normally reluctant to write I would let her have a go. Hope this is O.K. We can always add to it tomorrow, change it or edit it.

    1. No that’s great, if Jasmine was eager to write all the better.
She can always have another go tomorrow or mainly edit and improve what she did today.
