Year 5 Tuesday 24th November

Good morning Year 5! Welcome to all 5U and 5K pupils. Thank you for coming on to virtual school today. We would like you to log into virtual school every day to access the learning. It is crucial that we maintain a routine that is as close as possible to a normal school day during the next two weeks. New learning will be available each weekday. Don’t hesitate to ask if you need any support or just want to check-in. Remember to tweet your work @hillstoneps. Make sure you leave a comment every day so we know you’re here (each day’s comments section will be used to take a register). Most importantly, make sure to stay safe! Have a great day!

Fantastic news! You can now send your work to us for feedback by uploading it here. Additionally, if you have any questions that you’d prefer to ask your teacher privately, send them to year5@hillstone.org.uk

Today’s special mention goes to Jasmine who really impressed us with her excellent work in topic and writing! Congratulations πŸ™‚

9:00-9:10

Let’s the start the day off with some early morning work! So, put your thinking hats on. Below is an activity that involves the processes of Mode, Median and Range. First of all watch the video as I explain how these processes are calculated then give the activity a go. – Make sure you have left a comment to let us know you’re here too!

Listen in as I explain how to calculate these processes -Mean, Mode, Median & Range

In today’s lesson, we are continuing with The Matchbox Diary. As a warm up, can you summarise the story so far in five bullet points?

Next, watch the video for each page. There’s a comprehension challenge at the end of most of the clips! (I had to divide the videos because my internet is very slow at the moment-larger files kept failing to upload. Apologies!)

There’s a problem with the video so please read this page for yourself.

Your task today is to rewrite the section of the story in which the family are reunited. It is possible to argue the lack of detail in the original limits its emotional impact.

In your version, focus on:

Dialogue between the family members

Powerful verb choices (have a go at using an online thesaurus.)

Descriptions of the family’s actions and facial expressions

Remember our rules for punctuating dialogue:

Good luck!! Remember to share a photo of your work using twitter or the Year 5 upload link at the top of the page.

Da Vinci

In art last week, we used guides to help draw proportionate human figures. Today, we’ll be using a similar technique to draw human faces.

First, let’s take a look at some more examples of Da Vinci’s work for inspiration.

In pictures two and three, notice how Da Vinci used a guide system to help get the proportions right.

Even the finest artists in the world need a little help!

Next, watch the video to see how it’s done. Stop the video after each step to give yourself plenty of time.

If you’re not happy with your first attempt, have another go! Remember, human faces are amongst the most challenging things to draw, especially if you’re aiming for a realistic style like Da Vinci. Practice and perseverance are key.

Once you have a face you’re pleased with, customise it using additional details and shading. Have a look at the portraits below for some ideas.

We’d love to see some of your work, so don’t forget to upload it! You may want to keep practising throughout the week before sharing. It’d be interesting to compare your first attempt with your final piece.

      1. Imagine you were the boy getting off the boat and meeting your father for the first time in years and years. What would you say to him? What would the rest of your family be saying? How would everyone be expressing their emotions?
