Year 6 Monday 23rd November

Good morning Year 6 and happy Monday.

Welcome to our virtual page. We would like you to log in every day to access your learning.  As we are all isolating, we will maintain a routine which is as close as possible to a normal school day.  New lessons will be uploaded every day and we are all available in the comments section should you require any support.

We hope you enjoy today’s lessons.  Please stay safe.

From Miss Kinsman, Mrs Bridges and Mrs Gillett.

Today’s timetable.

9:00-9:15

Good morning. Please say hello in the comments section below so we can mark you in on our registers. Settle in to the day by reading some of the extracts from The Happy News (PDF below) before writing begins.

This issue was all about strength and I found this article really interesting, inspiring and comforting. I hope you do too.

9:15-10:15

Writing

Welcome to today’s writing lesson….or should I say lessons! Don’t worry: you only need to do one of them. Start watching the first video below and it will all become clear! And as you can see, they are both about Macbeth, which I know we have all been enjoying studying.

By the way, in the shared writing, I’ve realised that I say the word ‘ not’, but fail to write it down so keep an eye out for that – oops!

If you normally work with a teaching assistant at the start of writing, click on the document below to help you with today’s writing.

10:15-10:30

Enjoy a quick break.

10:30-11:30

Maths

Warm up: SUPER MATHS BOWLING. Click here.

Play one player, or two if you have someone to play with, and then press 5 short game, you can always play it again later. Now click Year 5 and it will highlight the Year 5 and 6 objectives; however, if you are struggling with a specific times table, you may practise that instead. Then press play. Good luck.

Watch the lesson above, pausing at the appropriate times to complete any questions.

Now click here for your question sheet. Remember you can re-watch parts of the video to help you answer the questions.

Miss Hodgkinson’s group: warm-up click here and, for 10 minutes, practise the times tables you are currently working on. Click here for sheet 1 or sheet 2.

Join Mr King for your daily Barvember questions.

Click here for the question sheet.

11:30-11:45

Grab a piece of fruit and a drink and let’s watch Newsround together.

11:45-12:30

Reading

Welcome to the first virtual reading lesson of the week! Watch the video below to find out more information.

Pause the video each time you are asked to complete a task and let me know how you are getting on in the comments section below. At the end of the video, you will have a longer task to complete, which you can then send to me for some feedback.

For certain tasks, you may need to use the documents below the video.

*In one of the model answers, I have spelt the word ‘introduced’ incorrectly. I apologise for this.

Miss Hodgkinson’s group: Complete the comprehension below and then read one of the books you were provided with on Friday, or click on the link below to choose a different text (make sure you select the correct colour!).

Click here to choose a different book to read.

12:30-13:30

Enjoy your lunch and we will see you back here at 13.30.

13:30-13:50

Accelerated Reader

Read your Accelerated Reader book. Let us know how you get on with your quizzes.

13:50-15:20

Topic

In topic today, you will be learning that there are two different sources of evidence you can use to learn about the past. They both help us build a picture about a time period or a specific historical event.

You will then re-cap your understanding of fact and opinion by researching statements about William Shakespeare.

Work through the lesson, click here, and complete sheet 1 and famous quotes when asked. Click here for the Horrible Histories link , if it doesn’t work on the lesson link.

Have fun!

15:20-15:35

Find a cosy space at home, then sit back and relax whilst listening to Mrs Bridges reading a retelling of Othello.

    1. No problem at all, Katelyn! To be fair, I did just stick that extra bit on the end with no warning!
Great to hear you’re still working hard, but make sure you take a break for lunch.

  1. Good afternoon Year 6.

I have added today’s Barvember questions and a video – you may need to REFRESH the page to see it. The first two questions are suitable for everybody – so you do not need to be in my group to have a go. Download the questions and have a look before you watch the video.

    Answers tomorrow!

  2. Miss gillet when you put I would recommend and then you said not suitable for children but you had accidentally put on the board ,”but it’s defiantly suitable for children” instead of not suitable for children. Just a nice heads up thank you for the advise earlyer really helpful thank you. Working hard not giving up.

    From Katelyn:)

    1. Ah, thanks, Katelyn! Yes, I only realised way too late (when my husband noticed it last night!) and have popped an extra bit on the end of the video to explain, but sadly it’s not correct in the shared writing segment.
Really glad the advice helped and thank you asking for it and for having such a positive attitude to your learning.

    1. Hi Corey. You’ve worked hard this morning. Don’t forget that you are supposed to be self-isolating, so that means you can’t leave the house (apart from your back garden) unless you have an emergency or a medical reason.

        1. Oh no. Well watch it and the process I go through is: making denominators the same by finding the lowest common multiple, then change so they have the same denominator, then add together by keeping the denominator the same and adding the numerator. Don’t do the red question.

    1. Question E is all about the messages and ideas you have from Macbeth. Some of these statements – which we looked at in our very first Shakespeare lesson – might help you with this.

    1. Sorry about that, Leoni.

There should be four statements on there, which are as follows:

      – No one can withstand the power of temptation.
      – Everyone possesses character flaws that can cause us to hurt others.
      – Jealousy leads to tragic outcomes.
      – Fate is a stronger force than a person’s will.

      Hope this helps!

    1. Is it a photo you are submitting? Sometimes things just don’t work the first time, so perhaps just try again.
And well done for thinking to move onto reading rather than getting caught up in trying to send in your maths.

  3. For writing, I have read work from the following children: Ruby, Corey, Ibrahim, Daniel, Summer, Ava, Emilia, Mitchell B and Mason (and maybe Darcy – it looks like your handwriting, but there’s no name!)
If you have submitted work, but your name isn’t on the list, please send it in again, making sure your name is on it and sending it as a photo, please, as some of the other file types aren’t loading properly for me.
    Thank you!

  4. What bit do you do for reading I finished math a bit early so I got to work with newsround And reading but I can’t find the longer reading task under the video

    1. Hi Kian. The task is explained at the end of the video. You need to choose a book that you have read, or our previous class reader, and explain 2 or 3 themes, minimum, that run throughout it.

  5. I don’t know any film book or character that is similar to Macbeth. I don’t know what I should do I am really stuck. Please try and help me if you can. Thank you stay safe

    From Katelyn 🙂

    1. Hi Katelyn,
That’s no problem. If you can’t make any comparisons like this, you don’t have to. However, maybe I can help you make some links: Can you think of another story in which a character has a bad influence on another character? Or perhaps another story where people want things and trying to get them has bad consequences? Hope this helps!

    1. Hi Alecia,

So for the red question, you know that both numbers have to be the same. You know that the numerator in the first fraction has to be 8 or less, because the other numerator is 1 and the answer is 9.

We know that the denominator for the second question can’t be 20 then, so it must be smaller. Look at the numbers 1 – 8, which ones are factors of 20? Once you have worked that out, try each one in both boxes to see which one works in both.

      I hope that helps.

  6. Hello again, everyone!

It’s great to see your work coming in, but some of it doesn’t have a name on it – if that’s you, please pop your name on it and resubmit it. And if you can make the filename your name, even better!

We will send Marvellous Me badges to everyone who sends in work and then we will give feedback on tomorrow’s page to let you all know how you’ve got on.

    1. That’s frustrating. Are you using WiFi or your data? Maybe try the other one. You may find the video needs to buffer and then will play okay. Fingers crossed!

    1. Thanks, Mitchell. I’ve been through them all, but didn’t see yours. Was your name on it? Also, it’s easiest if you send a photo as some of the other file types aren’t loading for me.
