Year 6 Thursday 7th January

Good morning Year 6 and happy Thursday!

Welcome to our virtual page. We would like you to join us every day to access your learning. As we are all living under the restrictions of a national lockdown, we will maintain a routine which is as close as possible to a normal school day.  New lessons will be uploaded every day and we are available in the comments section should you require any support.

We hope you enjoy today’s lessons.  Please stay safe.

From Miss Kinsman, Mrs Bridges and Mrs Gillett.

Today’s timetable.

9:00-9:15

Good morning. Please say hello in the comments section below so we can mark you in on our registers. Settle in to the day by reading some of the extracts from The Happy News (images below) before writing begins.

Some things to think about this morning…

9:15-10:15

Writing

After all your preparations yesterday, you are ready to start writing your formal application letter. Watch the video below, pausing when asked to (and when you feel you need to). Make sure you spend at least 25 minutes writing today and do submit your work to us, please.

In the video, I mention the support sheet you need to use once you have written your introductory paragraph. This will help you write one or two of your reason paragraphs and is just below this paragraph. Do also refer to your notes from yesterday about what skills and attributes a good detective needs.

If you usually work with a teaching assistant at the start of the lesson and use a sheet for your writing, here it is:

10:15-10:30

Enjoy a quick break.

10:30-11:30

Maths

Warm up: play Alien Attack. Click here for game. Play first quadrant.

Watch the lesson above, pausing at the appropriate times to complete any questions.

Sorry all but the PowerPoint presentation wouldn’t upload. It is exactly what I was doing when I was moving the ruler.

Now click here for your question sheet. Remember you can re-watch parts of the video to help you answer the questions.

Click here for the pink questions.

Miss Hodgkinson’s group: warm-up click here and, for 10 minutes, practise the times tables you are currently working on. Click here for 5 x table sheet and here for 3 x table sheet.

11:30-11:45

Grab a piece of fruit and a drink and let’s watch Newsround together.

11:45-12:30

Reading

Feedback from yesterday: You did wonderfully with the fact and opinion yesterday – well done! And some of your predictions and quotes were really interesting and well thought out.

Just a reminder: Please put your name on the work you submit.

Watch the video below for today’s lesson.

Pause the video each time you are asked to complete a task and also pause and re-watch any time you need to.

Hillstone Life Skills

Start this week’s Life Skills lesson with some gentle meditation, using the clip below if you would like to.

Look at the image below, which of these are strengths that you have?

What other strengths do you have? Create a mind map of all your strengths.

Read the story below:

Let’s look at some other famous people who could have easily quit something because it was hard. Click on this link to take you to the website, and read 1, 2, 3 and 5, or scan the QR code below.

Do you know of anyone else who has shown the same level of resilience as any of the people you have just read about?

Think of two goals for yourself and jot these down on your iPad or in a notebook:

One needs to be a school goal e.g. to speak confidently in assembly, to learn your Year 5/6 spellings, to learn your times tables up to 12 x 12 etc.

The other goal can be an aspiration for outside of school e.g. gain a yellow belt in karate, to play for the local football team etc.

In next week’s lesson, we will be thinking about the steps that you need to take to achieve these goals.

Finally, what is being proud?

14:40-15:20

French

Bonjour! Everything you need for today’s French lesson is in the video below. Enjoy!

  1. I’m struggling with maths today. I understood the first Questions but then I started to struggle because on the video it said something about a power point but there was no power point and now I’m struggling to understand what to do Because I didn’t see the power point which I think I needed to see to understand the lesson. Please help me if you can.

    1. Hi Katelyn. Miss Kinsman did say that there was no PowerPoint as it would not upload so you don’t need to watch that. I wouldn’t worry about it and have a break for lunch then continue with the afternoon.

    1. I will try and help. So you have to work out the coordinates of B and D, which you can do by using the coordinates of A and C. You know that the first coordinate is x (how far across the coordinate is) and the second is y (how high/low the coordinate is).

Using this, we can look at B. It has gone across the same amount as C (14, -4) which means that the x coordinate for B must be the same, 14.

We can see that B is the same height as A (-10, 8), which means that the y coordinate must be the same, 8.

      Therefore, B’s coordinates must be (14, 8).

I hope that helps and using this you can try and work out the coordinates for D.

    1. It just means a more effective word (however, although, therefore) to join two sentences together rather than the simpler ones (and, but, so, because, if).

  2. Hi good morning sorry I forgot to put a comment. But I have been working hard. I hope your all ok and safe.

    From Katelyn 🌈 🙂 (^_^)

    1. Hi Jack. You are absolutely right. It was yesterday’s video, but we have now fixed this issue and the correct video has been uploaded to the page. Thank you for letting us know and sorry about that.
