Today, we are going to finish our The Matchbox Diary writing. Make sure you have your plan from yesterday.

A big thank you to everyone who has uploaded writing for me to look at. For this piece, let’s really focus on demonstrating our show-don’t-tell skills.

As a warm up, can you improve each of the following sentences? Edit out the telling of emotions and replace it with showing.

For example:

Looking at Grandma’s ring makes me happy.

This sentences is very boring. Try something more like:

Holding Grandma’s ring brings a smile to my lips and a warmth to my heart.

If you get stuck, take a look at my videos.

Warm up 1

Whenever I look at my old goalie gloves, I feel disappointed.

Warm up 2

Looking at my first cinema tickets makes me so nervous.

What a great thumbnail that is. Beautiful!

Warm up 3

Seeing her face in the photo makes me feel thankful.

Once you’ve finished the warm-up, get started with your final piece.

Good luck! Remember to upload your work so we can check it out!

The Human Body

Today we will be exploring the impact some drugs have on the function of the body.

A drug is a substance that has an effect on the function of the body when it is swallowed or otherwise introduced.

Some people assume that all drugs are bad. Can you prove this isn’t the case?

Let’s take a look at some examples!

Caffeine

Caffeine is one of the most widely used drugs in the world. Where do you think it can be found?

The drug provides a temporary sense of alertness and can improve your mood. How do you think this can be helpful?

The drug does have some side effects.

The most common is insomnia (it becomes difficult for the user to fall asleep).

Additionally, caffeine can be addictive. If someone is used to having a lot of caffeine each day and they suddenly stop taking it, they are likely to experience nasty headaches and feel very tired.

Nicotine

Nicotine is another commonly used drug. Where can it be found?

Nicotine makes the user feel relaxed and can reduce stress.

Downsides

The drug has some unpleasant side effects.

It is highly additive (it’s very difficult for most people to stop using it once they’ve started).

A lot of people consume the drug by smoking, which causes a range of heath problems.

Painkillers

Pain killers are drugs which relieve sensations of pain. They often work by blocking pain receptors in the brain. Can you think of any examples? Can you think of a situation in which someone might need painkillers?

Negatives

Some painkillers are addictive.

Excessive use puts a lot of strain on the kidneys, where drugs are broken down.

Certain painkillers make it difficult for people to go to the toilet. What is this called?

Tranquilisers

Tranquilisers has a variety of uses.

Lower doses can be used to relief stress, while higher doses are used for sedation. Can you find out what sedation means?

Side effects

Like the other drugs we have explored, tranquillizers can have issues.

Once people stop taking tranquillizers, they can become depressed.

Furthermore, combining certain tranquillizers with alcohol can have severe consequences such as slowed heart rate and breathing.

…………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………

To summarise, drugs can be extremely useful but they need to be treated with respect.

Your task is to produce a poster about the different drugs we have looked at.

You need to explain the effect the drugs have and what the side effects can be.

If you’re looking for inspiration, check out this superb piece of work from Tia.

Please remember to upload your work. We’d love to see it when it’s done!

  1. Mom, is uploading my writing now, I’ve done maths, it was trickier today but I had a go. I’m doing my topic poster, I’ve read all the information about drugs.

  2. I have finished all my maths, done 3 more accelerated reader quizzes. Done my writing, and listened to the story of Omar and Sam, and done the questions for Under the Skin. And listened to Newsround – Mom wasn’t happy about “the hand of god” from years ago. I am now going to do topic to finish for today.
