Year 6 Friday 15th January 2021

Good morning Year 6 and happy Friday.

Welcome to our virtual page. We would like you to log in every day to access your learning. As we are now in a national lockdown, we will maintain a routine which is as close as possible to a normal school day.  New lessons will be uploaded every day and we are available in the comments section should you require any support.

We hope you enjoy today’s lessons.  Please stay safe.

From Miss Kinsman, Mrs Bridges and Mrs Gillett.

Watch the welcome message to see if you are this week’s Hillstone Star.

Today’s timetable.

9:00-9:15

Good morning. Please say hello in the comments section below so we can mark you in on our registers. Settle in to the day by reading an extract from The Happy News (image below) which I think we could all do with right now, before writing begins.

Spelling

Our spelling rule this week is adding the suffix -ous.

First of all, watch this short video on BBC, read the information underneath it and make notes about this spelling rule. Once you’ve completed this, you may like to have a go at some of the games/activities on this webpage.

Here is a little re-cap on the rules:

Adding the suffix -ous turns a noun into an adjective. It means ‘full of’. So ‘Dangerous’ means ‘full of danger’.

1) If the root word doesn’t change, just add ‘ous’ – e.g danger —-> dangerous

2) If the word ends in ‘e’, drop the e and add ‘ous’ – e.g. fame —->  famous

3) If the word ends in ‘y’ change it to an ‘i’ and add ‘ous’ – e.g. vary —-> various

4) if the word ends in ‘our’, ‘our’ becomes ‘or’, then add ‘ous’ – e.g. humour —-> humorous

Now you’ve learnt about the spelling rule, you need to click on the links below to continue practising this spelling rule on SpellingFrame. Once you are happy and confident, complete the spelling test on each page.

Spelling Rule 11 – The suffix –ous (1 of 2)

Spelling Rule 12 – The suffix –ous (2 of 2)

As with most spelling rules, there are always some exceptions! Have a go at the word search below to get more familiar with the exceptions to this rule and practise the spellings.

Art

Art

For today’s art lesson, you are going to start producing your final piece. You will need:

  • a pencil
  • a piece of paper
  • a copy of the courtroom scene of your choice (this can be on your iPad or laptop)

First, look at the four courtroom scenes (in the document below) and choose the one you would like to recreate.

Now, using a pencil, begin to very gently (don’t press down hard) sketch the outline of that courtroom scene. You can see my example, and the example of some children’s last year, below.

If you, like me when I first started, look at this task and have NO IDEA where to start and think there is NO WAY you’ll be able to do it, then watch the video below to see me have a go and share my top tips at how to be successful.

This will most likely take you a while to do and if we were in school, we would spend a couple of afternoons on this, so make a good start on it today, and we will continue it next Friday!

14:50-15:20

PE

There are a few options for your PE sessions, each day.

  1. Follow along with Joe Wicks, on his YouTube channel here, where he will be back to doing live workouts every morning at 9am. You can catch up with these in the afternoon, or shift your day around so you start the day this way and follow along live.
  2. Check out the activities on Coach’s PE From Home page here and choose one (or more!) to complete.
  3. Go for some exercise outdoors, whether it’s a walk, a jog, a run or something else.
  4. Choose an activity from Youth Sports Trust. You can find a list of fun activities here.

If you are able to, please take photos or videos of whichever activity you choose and upload to Twitter @hillstoneps (include your name and year group) so we can see what you are getting up to!

    1. No worries Lara. It’s so nice to hear from you. How are you?
Sorry for the late reply; I had internet issues.
Have you been on all week? Just so I can fill you in on the register.

    1. I’ve just looked at them both thank you. You’ve clearly been working hard.
There isn’t a button as you are only starting your work today. We will put an upload button on for the final piece.

  1. The spelling test keeps freezing and zooming in which means it wouldn’t let me Finnish I have tried over and over if you have any suggestions let me know.

    From Katelyn

    1. Hi Katelyn
I’m not sure sorry. I’ve been on just and it seems ok. Maybe it is your internet connection. I honestly don’t know.
Do not worry. Move on to the other lessons and come back to it later.
