Year 6 Thursday 4th February

Good morning Year 6 and happy Thursday.

Welcome to our virtual page. As we are all living under the restrictions of a national lockdown, we will maintain a routine which is as close as possible to a normal school day. New lessons will be uploaded every day and we are available in the comments section should you require any support.

We hope you enjoy today’s lessons.  Please stay safe.

From Miss Kinsman, Mrs Bridges and Mrs Gillett.

As this week is Children’s Mental Health Week, each day we have a different story and a video that will help you with breathing and meditation techniques if you would like to give it a go. We hope that these will be helpful and enjoyable and you will find them at the bottom of each day’s page.

Today’s timetable.

9:00-9:15

Good morning. Please say hello in the comments section below so we can mark you in on our registers. Settle in to the day by reading an extract from The Happy News (image below) which I think we could all do with right now, before writing begins.

9:15-10:15

Writing

Thank you for all the writing sent in yesterday; here’s some feedback for you:

You will be completing your newspaper article today; everything you need to know is in the video. However, do drop us a comment or email if you need additional guidance.

If you usually use a sheet for writing with prompt questions on, please download the PDF below. You do not need to watch the main video above, but need to watch some of the interviews video below. However, please only use this if you usually have something like this in school AND normally work with a teaching assistant at the start of a writing lesson. If you are unsure, ask in comments, please!

10:15-10:30

Enjoy a quick break.

10:30-11:30

Feedback from yesterday: I love seeing all the great work you are doing thank you. The only area I noticed some of you were getting stuck on was 5%. Drawing a bar will really help you. I model this again in the lesson below.

Watch the lesson above, pausing at the appropriate times to complete any questions.

Now click here for your question sheet. Remember you can re-watch parts of the video to help you answer the questions.

Click here for the pink questions only if you are finding the work tricky.

PE

There are a few options for your PE sessions, each day.

  1. Follow along with Joe Wicks, on his YouTube channel here, where he will be back to doing live workouts every morning at 9am. You can catch up with these in the afternoon, or shift your day around so you start the day this way and follow along live.
  2. Check out the activities on Coach’s PE From Home page here and choose one (or more!) to complete.
  3. Go for some exercise outdoors, whether it’s a walk, a jog, a run or something else.
  4. Choose an activity from Youth Sports Trust. You can find a list of fun activities here.

If you are able to, please take photos or videos of whichever activity you choose and upload to Twitter @hillstoneps (include your name and year group) so we can see what you are getting up to!

Children’s Mental Health Week

Find a cosy space at home, then sit back and relax whilst watching and listening to the books chosen this week, specifically for Children’s Mental Health Week.

Meditation can be a really lovely way to help you become, and stay, calm and relaxed. Watch the video below for a guide on how to do this successfully. Remember, everything takes practise, so don’t worry if you can’t do this the first few times you have a go. The more you do it, the better you will get and the easier it will become.

  1. Hi its Skye’s Mom would appreciate it if Mrs Bridges or anyone can give me a call when you can as i need to speak to you about something not work related. Thank you

    1. It’s ok that you’ve struggled Riley – it’s really challenging work this week! And I think lots of us have found it really hard. I’m really pleased that you asked your mum for help, and when we are back at school, I am sure we will be able to go over some of these areas.

I hope the video helps. Let me know how you get on.

    1. Unfortunately, I can’t show it you through the comments, but I know Miss Kinsman will have done a great job of explaining it on her video. Why don’t you watch the video a couple of times (pause it too), and do the exact same questions she is doing, and see if that helps?

What method did you use yesterday?

    1. I have checked on a couple of my devices and it is working fine on those, so perhaps you could try refreshing your page or check your Wi-Fi and let us know if that helps at all?

    1. It’s always good to magpie some ideas, but don’t forget you have your own ideas Corey and I know, from seeing it often in class, that your ideas, content, and language are really super so I would love it if you included lots of your own thoughts too.
