Year 6 Tuesday 24th November

Good morning Year 6 and happy Tuesday.

Welcome to our virtual page. We would like you to log in every day to access your learning.  As we are all isolating, we will maintain a routine which is as close as possible to a normal school day.  New lessons will be uploaded every day and we are all available in the comments section should you require any support.

We hope you enjoy today’s lessons.  Please stay safe.

From Miss Kinsman, Mrs Bridges and Mrs Gillett.

Today’s timetable.

9:00-9:15

Good morning. Please say hello in the comments section below so we can mark you in on our registers. Settle in to the day by reading some of the extracts from The Happy News (images below) before writing begins.

I hope that you enjoy reading today’s Happy News!

9:15-10:15

Writing

Here is some feedback from the work received yesterday:

Welcome to Tuesday’s writing. Make sure you have something to make notes on before you begin watching the video below, and if you used the second video yesterday then use the second one today. However, most of you will be on the first one. I will direct you to pause the video at certain points, so please do so then, but also pause (and re-watch) it as needed.

I am really looking forward to reading the work you submit – but do remember to pop your name on it (and if you can include it in the file name, even better!).

If you usually use a writing prompt in lessons, here’s one for today:

10:15-10:30

Enjoy a quick break.

10:30-11:30

Maths

Warm up: HIT THE BUTTON. Click here.

Play square numbers. Let me know your score in the comments. Good luck.

Feedback from yesterday: Thank you all for completing the work yesterday.  I think it was the red question that was giving you all the biggest trouble.  To answer the question you needed to find a factor of 20 ( so: 2, 4, 5, or 10) and then trial and error.  DO NOT worry about it.  The main objective yesterday was to add numbers by making the denominator the same and you could all do that.

For yesterday’s answers click here.

Watch the lesson above, pausing at the appropriate times to complete any questions.

Now click here for your question sheet. Remember you can re-watch parts of the video to help you answer the questions.

Click here for the pink questions.

Miss Hodgkinson’s group: warm-up click here and, for 10 minutes, practise the times tables you are currently working on. Click here for sheet 1 or sheet 2.

A little bit of extra maths – for ALL groups. Join Mr King for your daily Barvember questions.

Click here for the question sheet.

11:30-11:45

Grab a piece of fruit and a drink and let’s watch Newsround together.

11:45-12:30

Reading

Feedback from yesterday: Thank you for sending me your work yesterday. I really enjoyed looking at your text choices and reading your thoughts about them. The themes that you had identified for your chosen text were accurate and varied. Moving forwards, I would like to see more detailed explanations as to why you had chosen that theme. I can’t wait to see your work again today!

Watch the video below for today’s lesson.

Pause the video each time you are asked to complete a task and let me know how you are getting on in the comments section below. At the end of the video, you will have a longer task to complete, which you can then send to me for some feedback.

Miss Hodgkinson’s group: Complete the comprehension below and then read one of the books you were provided with on Friday, or click on the link below to choose a different text (make sure you select the correct colour!).

Click here to choose a different book to read.

12:30-13:30

Enjoy your lunch and we will see you back here at 13.30.

13:30-13:50

Accelerated Reader

Read your Accelerated Reader book. Let us know how you get on with your quizzes.

13:50-14:35

Grammar

Here is your grammar lesson for today. Within it, there are places where I will tell you pause, but also do pause whenever you need to. There are several activities to complete and notes to make, so do have something handy to write on.

14:35-15:20

P.E.

Click here to visit Coach’s PE page. Complete one of the activities and tweet us a picture.

15:20-15:35

Find a cosy space at home, then sit back and relax whilst listening to Mrs Bridges read the second half of a retelling of Othello.

    1. All good at my house, thanks, and enjoying the challenges of getting to grips with iMovie to make your lessons. How are you? How’s your learning going?

    1. I liked having a sound effect for the writing videos and wanted one for grammar, and thought mystery music suited this well as prepositions were probably a bit of a mystery to you at the start of the lesson!

        1. Ah, I see! No, don’t worry about sending them in – they were just to help with your learning. Have you tried the quiz at the end of the lesson?

    1. Thanks, Mitchell – I’m pleased you kept going with it and now feel more confident. Sometimes that is exactly what we need to do to help us learn and tackle things that initially seem tricky.

  1. I’ve uploaded my writing and reading work again because I think sent them as a pages file. Do I need to resend any of the work from yesterday that was a pages file ?

    1. Thanks, Alex – that’s really appreciated.
Don’t worry about doing yesterday’s again, but sorry if you didn’t get Marvellous Me messages yesterday as we probably didn’t realise you had submitted work to us.

    1. Sorry to hear your internet has been proving problematic, but well done for having done as much as you can. Do contact here on comments during the lessons if you want us to talk you through bit you may have missed.

    1. Hi Skye! It’s great to see you logged on here now. Perhaps, you will be able to catch up on some of the lessons you have missed as they are really important.

      1. Did you try re-watching it? Could you copy what Miss Kinsman is doing in the video (as in write down what she does) as sometimes doing it yourself – even if you are just copying what she does – will help your learning?

  2. I tried to upload the photo of my writing but it uploaded but I can’t see it and I don’t know if I have done it properly. Please try and help me if this is a problem. Stay safe

    From Katelyn 🙂 🌈

          1. The writing is the one I forgot to put my name on but I’m about to upload my math (which has my name on). I hope you are all ok stay safe.

            From Katelyn 🙂 🌈

          2. Ah, I see! I will let Miss Kinsman know to check the maths folder. All good here, thanks. Hope you and your family are well too.

        1. I think death could definitely be a theme. Expand on this a little more in your explanation. Use these questions to help form your answer. How many deaths are there? Are these violent? Do they occur throughout the text? Are they important to the story? What happens as a result of them?

  3. I don’t know how this is possible but I got yesterday’s green sheet questions wrong but got yesterday’s yellow sheet questions correct I. The answers I got for the green was 54/12 and 99/21 for the second green question. Please try and help me where I went wrong yesterday. Still working on today’s math too not giving up. Stay safe.

    From Katelyn 🙂 🌈

    1. Hi Katelyn. Well done on getting to yellow sheet correct. Do not worry too much about the green sheet. Focus on today’s instead, but do not spend more than 30 minutes on the questions. Just do as many as you can in this time and then move on to having some snack and watching newsround before reading. I am loving your attitude though! What a fabulous growth mindset you have, not giving up!

        1. Thanks Brogan. Just send a comment or submit work each day so we can see that you are with us, just like you have today. Enjoy your afternoon lessons.

    1. Hi Leoni. Which lesson is it for? At the end of each of the writing, maths and reading sections there is a button that you can click on to submit your work. So, if you can, take a photo or screenshot of the work you’ve completed and upload it using the buttons.

    1. Don’t worry. Remember you do not need to do all of the questions. Spend half an hour and aim for the red one.
If you do want to have a go then make the denominators the same first, and really the first one can only be a half.

  4. Maths and Writing for Mitch W has just been uploaded.
Is it ok to upload Barvember to the Maths submission point – I couldn’t find a specific submission point for it yesterday, so didn’t upload.

    1. Don’t worry Corey.
First step is to work out how much has been eaten altogether. Can you remember how to to that? Re-watch film clip to help.
Then take this answer away from the 5 whole bags Tina started with.
      Have a go.

    1. You can convert into an improper fraction if you want. On the video clip I have modelled two different ways of answering this type of question, re-watch it to help you.

    1. Hi Emilia

First of all you need to work out how much has been eaten already (by adding the fractions together)
Then you need to take this away from the 5 whole bags she started with.

    1. Of course. Have you just finished writing? It’s fine to start maths a little later than usual, but just be aware that you might start lunch a little later than usual.

    1. Have you some headphones you could use?
Adding subtitles manually would not be possible due to how long it would take, but I will speak to Mr Carter about whether automatic subtitling is an option.

    2. Hi Corey,
I’ve spoken to Mrs Bridges and she says you have headphones, so you use those, please.
Also, I considered the idea of automatic subtitles and even if we could get them working, they would cover up vital parts of the video. It’s an adaptation we would work on if we had hearing impaired children, but for your situation, headphones definitely seem the best solution!
      Thanks,
      Mrs Gillett
