Year 6 Wednesday 25th November

Good morning Year 6 and welcome to Wednesday’s lessons.

Welcome to our virtual page. We would like you to log in every day to access your learning.  As we are all isolating, we will maintain a routine which is as close as possible to a normal school day.  New lessons will be uploaded every day and we are all available in the comments section should you require any support.

We hope you enjoy today’s lessons.  Please stay safe.

From Miss Kinsman, Mrs Bridges and Mrs Gillett.

Today’s timetable.

9:00-9:15

Good morning. Please say hello in the comments section below so we can mark you in on our registers. Settle in to the day by reading some of the extracts from The Happy News (images below) before writing begins.

9:15-10:15

Writing

Welcome to Wednesday’s writing lesson. Firstly, here’s some quick feedback from yesterday’s learning:

In today’s lesson, we will continue with our Banquo’s ghost narratives. When you are watching the video below, pause it whenever you are asked to so you can carry out the task I’ve set. However, please feel free to pause and re-watch as needed. If you need any help along the way, please just contact me via the comments section below. I can’t wait to read what you have written so please do send in a photo of your work – including your name too, please!

If you normally have a colourful sheet with questions and prompts on for writing, here’s yours for today:

10:15-10:30

Enjoy a quick break.

10:30-11:30

Maths

Warm up: COUNTDOWN. Click here.

If you cannot remember how to play countdown, choose six cards then a target and try to make the target number. You do not need to use all the numbers. Play for 10 minutes.

For yesterday’s answers click here.

Feedback from yesterday: thank you for submitting your work. Please remember to put your name on it. As I said in my welcome message, when you get onto the questions just spend 30 minutes on them.

Watch the lesson above, pausing at the appropriate times to complete any questions.

Now click here for your question sheet. Remember you can re-watch parts of the video to help you answer the questions.

Click here for the pink questions.

Miss Hodgkinson’s group: warm-up click here and, for 10 minutes, practise rapid recall of addition and subtraction. Click here for sheet 1 or sheet 2.

Now complete your daily Barvember questions with Mr King.

Click here for the question sheet.

11:30-11:45

Grab a piece of fruit and a drink and let’s watch Newsround together.

11:45-12:30

Reading

I have loved looking at your reading work. You have thought about the themes and explained them so well. Keep working on those detailed explanations, referring back to the text.

Watch the video for today’s reading lesson. Remember you can pause and re-watch as much as you need to. If you have any questions, then just ask me in the comments section and I will do my best to help you.

Miss Hodgkinson’s group: Complete the comprehension below and then read one of the books you were provided with on Friday, or click on the link below to choose a different text (make sure you select the correct colour!).

Click here to choose a different book to read.

12:30-13:30

Enjoy your lunch and we will see you back here at 13.30.

13:30-13:50

Accelerated Reader

Read your Accelerated Reader book. Let us know how you get on with your quizzes.

Hillstone Life Skills

The first thing we could like you to consider is this:

Why not tell us your thoughts on this in the comment section?

Now, think about the following:

  1. What might a personal barrier to your own learning?
  2. Is the barrier related to a specific subject?
  3. What strategies have you tried to overcome it?
  4. Why do you think it’s a barrier?
  5. What other strategies could you try?

There are two types of barriers: external and internal.

Internal barriers are things that are happening within you. For example, not asking for help when you need it. External barriers are things that are happening around you, or in the environment you’re in, that you can’t necessarily control. For example, other children talking loudly.

We would like you to think about and choose a barrier to your learning. This should be something that you think can sometimes stop you for achieving what you’re fully capable of, or stop you from achieving full stop. Once you have chosen one, think about ways you may be able to overcome this, if you tried different strategies.

Now, using the model below to give you an idea of how to start, create a comic strip illustrating this. There is an image below of some apps that you may find useful for this activity.

Click here to visit Coach’s PE page. Complete one of the activities and tweet us a picture.

15:20-15:35

Find a cosy space at home, then sit back and relax whilst listening to Miss Kinsman read the first half of a retelling of Twelfth Night.

        1. Hi Skye. Could you let us know what the file name (what you saved the document as) is and Mrs Gillett will see if she can find it. Has it got your name on it?

    1. Thanks, Mason – I love that you are being reflective about your learning, but don’t worry as I just used the word ‘narrative’ in the video, but what you are writing is essentially a story (written in the first person).

  1. Mr king i have a question for you not related but its a maths question i know the answer to any teachers can have a go at this i want to see if you can get it right

What does 1.6 torrs = (torrs means newtons per square meter )

    1. Laptops do that at the most inconvenient of times, don’t they?! Anyway, no problem at all – you just might finish a bit later than usual, that’s all!

    1. What’s that needed for, please, Corey? I can offer a better solution that way – might be something I need to check with Mr Carter. Are you using an iPad or a different device?

    1. Okay, Alecia. In the video, I say to not worry about that and instead follow on from the example I’ve shown you. Re-watch from 1:10 and that explains this.

    1. Sorry to hear that, Riley.
This follows on from the writing we did last Thursday in school.
If you missed that lesson, head to the second writing lesson from Monday and complete that instead.

    1. Oh! That might be my video editing skills or an internet issue. I am sure you’ll manage fine without those 14 seconds, but let me know if you need any guidance on the lesson.
I’ll take a look at the video now and see whether I can see what you’re missing!

      1. I’ve found it! I had such issues with this video and thought I had fixed it all, but clearly not!

In that bit that’s missing, I mention what we had written before – about Macbeth being made Thane of Cawdor – and how it makes sense to now mention Lady Macbeth’s reaction to this as she’s so important in the story and it’s her reaction which then drives the events that happen.

  2. Hi sorry I’m a bit late but here I am ready to go. I won’t give up on anything I do because I’m having a happy (positive) start to the day. Hope your all well and safe.

    From Katelyn 🙂 🌈

      1. I’m trying to do the writing but I don’t understand what or how to do it, I’ve watched the video a few times and it still doesn’t make sense to me

        1. Were you in school last Wednesday and Thursday? If so, this lesson follows on from that learning.
However, if not, I did make different videos for Monday and Tuesday for any children who had missed that learning in school last week – and mentioned this at the start of Monday’s first video.
If you don’t know anything about Banquo being dead, head to the second video from Monday and do that instead.

    1. Morning Jenson! That is so great to hear. Thank you for always being so enthusiastic! We added in an extra PE lesson on Tuesdays, as we are all self-isolating and it’s really important to keep active. Have a great day.
