Year 5 Thursday 4th March

Good morning Year 5! Welcome to all 5U and 5K pupils. Thank you for coming on to virtual school today. We would like you to log into virtual school every day to access the learning. It is crucial that we maintain a routine that is as close as possible to a normal school day during the next two weeks. New learning will be available each weekday. Don’t hesitate to ask if you need any support or just want to check-in. Remember to tweet your work @hillstoneps. Make sure you leave a comment every day so we know you’re here (each day’s comments section will be used to take a register). Most importantly, make sure to stay safe! Have a great day!

Have you commented to say you are here?

Fantastic news! You can now send your work to us for feedback by uploading it here. Please make sure that you have your name on each piece of work that you submit. Additionally, if you have any questions that you’d prefer to ask your teacher privately, send them to year5@hillstone.org.uk

9:15-10:30 Writing: World Book Day

As it’s World Book Day today, we have something a little different lined up for you!

Step 1: Enjoy the fantastic story of The Day the Crayons Quit by clicking on the YouTube link below.

Step 2: Read a review of this book by clicking on the button below. You will be writing your own book review later in the lesson, so try to notice how this one is written, including what information goes in it and the style of it.

Step 3: Choose a picture book to review. Why not check out the ones being read on our dressed-up readers part of the Hillstone World Book Day page? Or perhaps you have one in mind and can find it being read aloud on YouTube? Or maybe you have one at home that you could read now?

Step 4: Write your own book review. Use the example one (from step 2) to help you. Then please write your name on it, take a photo and send it in!

10:30-10:45 – Take a break and move around!

  1. Hi Miss Young I put up my maths and I did the book competition. I listened to the teacher stories and clips. I like cave baby. I am still making my den.

    1. Hi Josh. Which part of it are you struggling with? For the medium level you need to be answering the questions in the middle of the sheet. If there’s any specific part you’re finding difficult, then comment back and I can try to help you.

      1. I donโ€™t know where to find the information on the sheet because it says shade the following fractions in. A) b) c) d) but I donโ€™t know where those fractions are.

        1. For the sheet you’re working on, it just the questions in the middle of the sheet. None of your questions say to shade anything. You’re completing the questions that start with 1) Find 1/4 of these amounts a) 20 b) 40 c) 120 d) 36 then work your way down. Does that help?

    1. Hi Mamadou. Today you need to listen to the story The Day the Crayons Quit and read the book review example. You then need you choose your own book to write a book review for. Make sure you take a look at the Book Review Example before you write your own review.

    1. If you have a look at the links on today’s page or on the World Book Day tab at the top of the website, there is an entire page to explain what World Book Day is and some more information. It is a day to celebrate the joy we can all get from reading and vouchers are given to all children to allow them to get a book either for free or ยฃ1 off a book.

  2. Good morning, Year 5! Miss Young here, I’ll be answering all of your comments for today but we’d still like you to send in your work so that I can pass it on to all of your teachers. Have a lovely day and I can’t wait to see some of the work you complete in Year 5.

  3. Hi Mr K. Love all the activities. I make dens all the time and I have a pink ten in my room to make it out of. I am so excited to see you. I missed you so much and all my friends. Stay safe stay well and I will see you on Monday.

    1. Hi Jasmine! That sounds like it would be a great entry for the den competition, don’t forget to tweet a picture to @HillstonePS if you can. I know Mr Krasnopolski is really looking forward to seeing all of his class again on Monday.
