Year 6 Thursday 28th January

Good morning Year 6 and happy Thursday.

Welcome to our virtual page. As we are all living under the restrictions of a national lockdown, we will maintain a routine which is as close as possible to a normal school day.  New lessons will be uploaded every day and we are available in the comments section should you require any support.

We hope you enjoy today’s lessons.  Please stay safe.

From Miss Kinsman, Mrs Bridges and Mrs Gillett.

Today’s timetable.

9:00-9:15

Good morning. Please say hello in the comments section below so we can mark you in on our registers. Settle in to the day by reading an extract from The Happy News (image below) which I think we could all do with right now, before writing begins.

I love the idea in the message below. Perhaps you could make a Happy Note for someone you care about.

9:15-10:15

Writing

Thank you for all the writing sent in yesterday; here’s some feedback for you:

Today’s lesson focuses purely on practising skills in tasks, rather than preparing for or creating a piece of writing. The video is longer than my usual ones, but the lesson itself shouldn’t take longer than an hour. I have given suggestions for how long to spend on the main tasks.

If you usually work with a teaching assistant at the start of a lesson and use a sheet for writing with prompt questions on, today’s task is below along with the PDF containing the images as well.

10:15-10:30

Enjoy a quick break.

10:30-11:30

Maths

Warm up: complete level 6, fractions, mixed on Daily 10. Please click here.

For yesterday’s answers click here.

Feedback from yesterday: You are doing some excellent, challenging, work. Please show working out for the questions where you are converting as it helps me to see where you have made a mistake, if you get the question wrong.

Also, I have had some super work in but without a name. PLEASE put your name on your work.

Watch the lesson above, pausing at the appropriate times to complete any questions.

Now click here for your question sheet. Remember you can re-watch parts of the video to help you answer the questions.

Click here for the pink questions only if you are finding the work tricky.

Miss Hodgkinson’s group: warm-up by watching, and joining in with, the two short film clips below.

Reading

Feedback from yesterday: There were some lovely summarys of the poem yesterday and I am really looking forward to seeing your work today.

Watch the video below for today’s lesson.

Pause and re-watch the video any time you need to. Any resources you need for the lesson will be underneath the video. Please remember to place you name on any work you submit, and if you need any help at all, please ask in the comments section.

A copy of the poem is below for you to download if you need or would like it.

13:50-14:35

French

Bonjour! Welcome to our French lesson. The video is below and you may want to download the PDF just below the video too (I mention more about this in the video). It’s important that you practise speaking the words and phrases, so if possible, find a space where you are able to do this and feel happy talking out loud during the lesson!

14:50-15:20

PE

There are a few options for your PE sessions, each day.

  1. Follow along with Joe Wicks, on his YouTube channel here, where he will be back to doing live workouts every morning at 9am. You can catch up with these in the afternoon, or shift your day around so you start the day this way and follow along live.
  2. Check out the activities on Coach’s PE From Home page here and choose one (or more!) to complete.
  3. Go for some exercise outdoors, whether it’s a walk, a jog, a run or something else.
  4. Choose an activity from Youth Sports Trust. You can find a list of fun activities here.

If you are able to, please take photos or videos of whichever activity you choose and upload to Twitter @hillstoneps (include your name and year group) so we can see what you are getting up to!

15:20-15:35

Find a cosy space at home, then sit back and relax whilst listening to Miss Kinsman read some extracts from The Book of Hopes.

    1. Ok, so let’s break the red question down:

      1. First, how many squares are there in total? 20
      2. How many full squares are shaded? 4
      3. How many of the squares have half shaded? 4
How many of these halves make 1 whole square? 2, so this mean if we have 4 halves, that makes 2 whole squares
      4. How many squares including the halves have been shaded? 6
      5. What does this look like as a fraction? 6/20

Now you can work out what percentage that is (and remember that percentages are out of 100).

I hope that helps Riley 🙂

    1. Hi Riley. Which part do you need help with? Remember that you can watch Miss Kinsman’s video, pausing and re-winding and re-watching as much as you need to so you can take in the new learning and have a go at the questions alongside her. And if you’re still finding it really tricky, you can always have a go at the pink questions. Percentages are something that lots of people always find hard so don’t worry that you’re finding it challenging today.

    1. Hi Skye. What exactly is it that you’re struggling with? I would recommend that you watch Miss Kinsman’s video, pausing and re-winding and re-watching as much as you need to so you can take it the new learning and complete the questions alongside her. Remember you can always have a go at the pink questions if you’re finding it really tricky today. Percentages are always hard so don’t worry that you’re finding it challenging.
