Year 6 Tuesday 23rd February 2021

Good morning Year 6 and happy Tuesday.

Welcome to our virtual page. As we are all living under the restrictions of a national lockdown, we will maintain a routine which is as close as possible to a normal school day. New lessons will be uploaded every day and we are available in the comments section should you require any support.

We hope you enjoy today’s lessons.  Do send us in photos of your work using the buttons on this page, and remembering to include your name! And, please stay safe.

From Miss Kinsman, Mrs Bridges and Mrs Gillett.

Today’s timetable.

9:00-9:15

Good morning. Please say hello in the comments section below so we can mark you in on our registers. Settle in to the day by reading an extract from one of my favourite books, and taking some time to think about it.

Writing

On the whole, the summaries I received yesterday were excellent: they showed super understanding of the poem and good summarising ability.

We are continuing our work on The Highwayman today. Please watch the main teaching video below, and access the YouTube video when directed to. It is important that you spend long enough on the main task in the lesson so maybe set yourself a timer for this.

Here is a copy of the poem in full:

If you usually work with a teaching assistant at the start of a writing lesson, and use a sheet with questions on, your task is contained in the PDF below.

10:15-10:30

Enjoy a quick break.

Maths

For yesterday’s answers, click here.

Feedback from yesterday: Great start today – well done. Just be careful with the questions where you know the output. For these questions, you need to complete the inverse.

Watch the lesson above, pausing at the appropriate times to complete any questions.

Now click here for your question sheet. Remember you can re-watch parts of the video to help you answer the questions.

Click here for the pink questions only if you are finding the work tricky.

Extension questions: If you finish the questions quickly, here is a logic problem to have a go at with the answers here.

Miss Hodgkinson’s group: warm-up click here and, for 10 minutes, practise the 3 and 4 times tables.

Miss Hodgkinson’s group: watch the lesson below.

PE

There are a few options for your PE sessions, each day.

  1. Follow along with Joe Wicks, on his YouTube channel here, where he will be back to doing live workouts every morning at 9am. You can catch up with these in the afternoon, or shift your day around so you start the day this way and follow along live.
  2. Check out the activities on Coach’s PE From Home page here and choose one (or more!) to complete.
  3. Go for some exercise outdoors, whether it’s a walk, a jog, a run or something else.
  4. Choose an activity from Youth Sports Trust. You can find a list of fun activities here.

If you are able to, please take photos or videos of whichever activity you choose and upload to Twitter @hillstoneps (include your name and year group) so we can see what you are getting up to!

  1. Miss I hear that we will be getting offers on Monday the 1 of March but I want to ask what they are basing it on of off as we haven’t did oust SATs yet?

    1. Hi Huma, You wouldn’t have done your SATs by 1st March even if SATs were happening as usual. Apart from a few secondary schools, children are not selected by ability/attainment. I hope that reassures you somewhat.

  2. I submitted all my work yesterday (I’m submitting today’s work later) but my mom said she hasn’t received any marvellous me badges for my work yesterday, just wanted to confirm my work was actually received. Thanks.

      1. Ah, no worries! Glad it’s all sorted.
Miss Kinsman was teaching in school all day so may have sent hers in the evening for that reason; and I tend to leave mine until the evening anyway as writing work tends to come in throughout the day and I like to send them all in one go!

    1. I’ve checked Marvellous Me at our end and it shows two badges being sent: one for maths and one for writing (so Miss Kinsman and I definitely received work from you, hence the badges!) However, Mrs Bridges said she didn’t receive any reading from you.
Can your mum try logging out of Marvellous Me and logging back in again? Maybe the badges will come through then as sometimes apps seem to need closing and reopening.
Please let me know how you get on.

  3. Good morning, its Teagans mom here, please could you help me understand what the working deeper maths question is asking. we know how to work out function machines but unsure with this question
    many thanks
    Lianne

    1. Out of the three function machines shown, two of them could be redone but with just one function rather than two. The question is asking which ones could be changed like this and how they could be changed. Here’s an example using different functions:

If a function machine had the first function of + 7 and the second of – 5 then we could essentially combine those two functions into one function of + 2 (because + 7 then -2 is the same as just doing + 5). But if a function machine had the first function of x 2 and the second of + 3 then those two functions could not be combined (as we can combine + and – functions together, and x and / together, but you can’t combine say a + and x)

Does that help? I hope so, but do let me know if I can help further.
