Year 6 Tuesday 9th February 2021

Good morning Year 6 and happy Tuesday.

Welcome to our virtual page. As we are all living under the restrictions of a national lockdown, we will maintain a routine which is as close as possible to a normal school day.  New lessons will be uploaded every day and we are available in the comments section should you require any support.

We hope you enjoy today’s lessons.  Please stay safe.

From Miss Kinsman, Mrs Bridges and Mrs Gillett.

Today’s timetable.

9:00-9:15

Good morning. Please say hello in the comments section below so we can mark you in on our registers. Settle in to the day by reading an extract from The Happy News (image below) which I think we could all do with right now, before writing begins.

Writing

Thank you for all the notes sent in yesterday; I can see that you are really well-prepared for today’s writing task, although some of you sent cruise ship notes rather than Venice ones (but I assume you completed both!)

Your lesson for today is below. Before you watch it, make sure you have your notes from yesterday to hand, please. As always, please pause it when asked and do use the suggested timings for each task, especially the final writing task.

In case you want to refer to it, here’s a copy of the model text (which we looked at yesterday):

If you usually work separately with a teaching assistant at the start of a writing lesson and work from a sheet with questions on, then your task is below. If you are unsure whether you should be doing this, please ask!

10:15-10:30

Enjoy a quick break.

10:30-11:00 (and in Accelerated Reader time if needed)

12:30-13:30

Enjoy your lunch and we will see you back here at 13.30.

Accelerated Reader

Read your Accelerated Reader book. Let us know how you get on with your quizzes.

Click here to visit our Virtual Library.

13:50-14:50

Watch the video below for this lesson.

It is a long video, but the topic is really important, so please do watch and take part in it all. You may want to break it down into stages, and watch in two 15 minute slots or three 10 minute slots, or you may prefer to watch and complete it all at once. Do what works best for you.

14:50-15:20

PE

There are a few options for your PE sessions, each day.

  1. Follow along with Joe Wicks, on his YouTube channel here, where he will be back to doing live workouts every morning at 9am. You can catch up with these in the afternoon, or shift your day around so you start the day this way and follow along live.
  2. Check out the activities on Coach’s PE From Home page here and choose one (or more!) to complete.
  3. Go for some exercise outdoors, whether it’s a walk, a jog, a run or something else.
  4. Choose an activity from Youth Sports Trust. You can find a list of fun activities here.

If you are able to, please take photos or videos of whichever activity you choose and upload to Twitter @hillstoneps (include your name and year group) so we can see what you are getting up to!

15:20-15:35

Find a cosy space at home, then sit back and relax whilst listening to Mrs Bridges read some extracts from The Book of Hopes.

  1. Hello – just checking – Daniel has shown me that he has submitted his writing, reading and Maths work for today. Fingers crossed that it has uploaded ok – I’ve suggested he waits till it confirms uploaded as he may have been clicking off the page too quickly? Thanks!

  2. Hello We have been having trouble with the internet and the School dongle isn’t letting me load any videos and I have to use my moms phone and a new internet box is coming on Monday so I will be able to log on properly then

    1. Hi Kyra,
Thanks for letting us know, but I’m so sorry that you are still experiencing problems with the dongle. I know Mr Carter did try calling you last week to talk you through it all after we spoke over the phone and you advised me of the issue (that was last Wednesday, I think).
I will see whether I can get a further phone call out to you so you have a solution for the next few days until the new internet comes! At least you can use your mum’s phone at the moment, but I know the small screen size can make it tricky.
      Thanks,
      Mrs Gillett

      1. An update: Mr King has asked Mr Carter to call you, so please expect a phone call this afternoon. Mr Carter is an IT whizz and the best person to sort this for you!

    1. Thanks, Darcy.
Did you see that the latest storm to strike Britain shares its name with you? I read about it last night and thought you’d like to know (if you didn’t already!)

    1. That’s so frustrating, Corey!
I have emailed Mr Carter to see whether we are having any general issues with the website; however, it is working fine at my end.
Does refreshing the page work? If not, try closing the browser, and perhaps even restarting your device, and loading it all again.
Do check that you don’t have lot of tabs open -I find that when I’m on my iPad it can be really easy to accidentally have several open and this can impede performance somewhat.

        1. I have contacted Mr Carter and he has checked the Y6 page and all videos work fine, so the issue seems to be the internet at your end, unfortunately.
Mr Carter suggests trying a different location in the room if you can as the signal may not be strong enough where you are sitting at present. If you are using a WiFi dongle, ensure it is charged and plugged into one of the laptops to ensure it remains charged.

  3. Hi I’m having trouble accessing the reading lesson I was in the middle of waching the clip and it randomly cut of and now it is just a blank screen do you have any idea of how I could get it back?

    1. That’s really annoying for you, Ciara!
I’ve checked the website at my end and it’s working fine, so it’s a bit tricky to know what to do. However, it may be worth coming out of your browser and re-loading the page completely, and using the refresh button may help too.
Please let me know how you get on.

  4. Miss I looked at the time table and it said there was a live lesson from 11:00 to 11:30 what does it mean live lesson like a lesson were the video is live or it is a call because I am confused 🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔

    1. Did you watch the welcome video, Huma? It’s all explained in there! It is a live lesson hosted by BBC Teach so you will be able to watch it – and join in via comments on the BBC website – but you won’t be seen or heard (via a camera or microphone).
