Year 6 Wednesday 20th January 2021

Good morning Year 6 and happy Wednesday.

Welcome to our virtual page. As we are all living under the restrictions of a national lockdown, we will maintain a routine which is as close as possible to a normal school day.  New lessons will be uploaded every day and we are available in the comments section should you require any support.

We hope you enjoy today’s lessons.  Please stay safe.

From Miss Kinsman, Mrs Bridges and Mrs Gillett.

Today’s timetable.

9:00-9:15

Good morning. Please say hello in the comments section below so we can mark you in on our registers. Settle in to the day by reading an extract from The Happy News (image below) which I think we could all do with right now, before writing begins.

Have a look at the charity below. The Happy News includes different charities, that might not otherwise be publicised widely, in each article. They are lovely to read about and very inspiring.

9:15-10:15

Writing

Thank you for all the sentences sent in yesterday; here’s some feedback for you:

Today we are going to apply our learning about colons and semi-colons. The Police Now Detective scheme has sent over something new for us to work on, so click on the video below now to find out more!

Here is a PDF containing the four mysterious images; remember, you only need to choose one.

If you usually use a sheet for writing with prompt questions on, please watch the video up until I start talking about the model text. When it gets to that point, stop the video and complete your writing task below:

10:15-10:30

Enjoy a quick break.

10:30-11:30

Maths

Warm up: play Decimals Jeopardy. Click here for website.

Feedback from yesterday: we are continuing our work on dividing decimals today. Just make sure you draw out your bus stop carefully and that the decimal point is clear.

Watch the lesson above, pausing at the appropriate times to complete any questions.

Now click here for your question sheet. Remember you can re-watch parts of the video to help you answer the questions.

Click here for the pink questions only if you are finding the work tricky.

Miss Hodgkinson’s group: warm-up click here and, for 10 minutes, practise the times tables you are currently working on.

Hillstone Life Skills

Please watch the video below for our first lesson focusing on mental and physical health and wellbeing. It is always important that we look after ourselves, but now more than ever, so I hope you find it both useful and interesting.

Any resources you need will be attached, available for you to download, below the video.

Once you have completed the above activity (as explained in the video), you can see the possibilities in the cards below.

14:50-15:20

PE

There are a few options for your PE sessions, each day.

  1. Follow along with Joe Wicks, on his YouTube channel here, where he will be back to doing live workouts every morning at 9am. You can catch up with these in the afternoon, or shift your day around so you start the day this way and follow along live.
  2. Check out the activities on Coach’s PE From Home page here and choose one (or more!) to complete.
  3. Go for some exercise outdoors, whether it’s a walk, a jog, a run or something else.
  4. Choose an activity from Youth Sports Trust. You can find a list of fun activities here.

If you are able to, please take photos or videos of whichever activity you choose and upload to Twitter @hillstoneps (include your name and year group) so we can see what you are getting up to!

15:20-15:35

Find a cosy space at home, then sit back and relax whilst listening to Miss Kinsman read some extracts from The Book of Hopes.

    1. Strange. No-one else has mentioned it.
I have just looked at it in my laptop and phone and was ok. I had to zoom in to see it. I clicked on the the name of the text rather than the download button.
      See if that helps.

    1. So you are dividing by a third. Can you remember how to do that from the film clip?

When you find out how much he has ran you need to take that away from 6km to see what he has left to do.

    1. Is it within your writing? Check either side of the semi colon makes sense on it’s own. Then check they are about the same thing.
Don’t worry though, Summer, Mrs Gillett will read through your work when you submit it.
Remember, this is a new skill so you wont get it perfect all the time.

    1. Thanks, Corey. The question asks which shop has the better deal – in other words, for the customer, which is the best shop? And the best shop is the one with the cheapest clay (as we are assuming they are selling the same quality of clay!)

    1. Yes, partway through the writing lesson, you are asked to pause the video and make notes about your chosen picture. Remember, choose one of the four images, rather than the one I demonstrate with. Later in the lesson you have a paragraph to write as well.

    1. Good morning Maisie.
Did your mom get the message about tutoring?
We are hoping you can still do it on a Monday at home online from 3.35 – 4.35.
You need access to your iPad and an adult present in the room.
      Let me know.

      1. Hi Miss, my mom has checked and she hasn’t had any message about the tutoring. Could the message be resent please. My mom said I should be able to do it.

    1. Good morning Mason. Sorry about the wordsearch on Monday. I only realised myself when I was doing it with the children in school and we couldn’t find it either. I hope you didn’t spend too long looking.
