Year 6 Tuesday 26th January 2021

Good morning Year 6 and happy Tuesday.

Welcome to our virtual page. As we are all living under the restrictions of a national lockdown, we will maintain a routine which is as close as possible to a normal school day.  New lessons will be uploaded every day and we are available in the comments section should you require any support.

We hope you enjoy today’s lessons.  Please stay safe.

From Miss Kinsman, Mrs Bridges and Mrs Gillett.

Today’s timetable.

9:00-9:15

Good morning. Please say hello in the comments section below so we can mark you in on our registers. Settle in to the day by reading an extract from The Happy News (image below) which I think we could all do with right now, before writing begins.

9:15-10:15

Writing

Thank you for all the planning notes sent in yesterday; here’s some feedback for you:

In today’s lesson, you will plan out your recount and start writing it. I have given suggested timings for each task on the video (along with a little pause symbol) to give you an idea of how long to spend on things, especially so you have sufficient time for writing later in the lesson. Please do contact me via the comments section below if you would like any further guidance.

If you usually work with a teaching assistant at the start of a writing lesson and use a sheet for writing with prompt questions on, today’s task is below. It is deliberately similar to yesterday, so make sure to use a different image today

Here is the PDF containing all the mysterious images.

10:15-10:30

Enjoy a quick break.

10:30-11:30

Maths

Warm up: play Decimals Jeopardy. Click here for the website.

For yesterday’s answers click here.

Feedback: I’m really impressed with your understanding. Please just be careful of fractions like 7/8 or 2/6. Use the bus stop method to work them out and keep adding a 0 until you get an answer or the number starts recurring.

Watch the lesson above, pausing at the appropriate times to complete any questions.

Now click here for your question sheet. Remember you can re-watch parts of the video to help you answer the questions.

Click here for the pink questions only if you are finding the work tricky.

Miss Hodgkinson’s group: warm-up click here and, for 10 minutes, practise the times tables you are currently working on.

Miss Hodgkinson’s group: watch the lesson below.

Miss Hodgkinson’s group: AL and JF click here for your questions. KK and KB click here for your questions.

11:30-11:45

Grab a piece of fruit and a drink and let’s watch Newsround together.

11:45-12:30

Reading

Watch the video below for today’s lesson.

Pause and re-watch the video any time you need to. Any resources you need for the lesson will be underneath the video. Please remember to place you name on any work you submit, and if you need any help at all, please ask in the comments section.

Miss Hodgkinson’s group: click on the links below and complete each session.

Part 1: speed sounds

Part 2: orange book

Part 3: hold a sentence

PE

There are a few options for your PE sessions, each day.

  1. Follow along with Joe Wicks, on his YouTube channel here, where he will be back to doing live workouts every morning at 9am. You can catch up with these in the afternoon, or shift your day around so you start the day this way and follow along live.
  2. Check out the activities on Coach’s PE From Home page here and choose one (or more!) to complete.
  3. Go for some exercise outdoors, whether it’s a walk, a jog, a run or something else.
  4. Choose an activity from Youth Sports Trust. You can find a list of fun activities here.

If you are able to, please take photos or videos of whichever activity you choose and upload to Twitter @hillstoneps (include your name and year group) so we can see what you are getting up to!

15:20-15:35

Find a cosy space at home, then sit back and relax whilst listening to Miss Kinsman read some extracts from The Book of Hopes.

    1. I don’t know, unfortunately. No definite date has been given; all we know is that school is operating like it is now until at least February half-term. When we know more, we will be sure to let you know!

      1. Kyra, I have seen your other message, but haven’t published it. Leave it with me and someone will be in touch soon. It will probably be that one of us calls later.

  1. I think today’s Maths lesson was easy well that’s my opinion but if you can do it a tiny bit more challenging that would help because I’m really good at percentages but thanks anyway

    1. I love that you’re reflecting on your learning and feeling super successful with it! I assume that the next few days will build on what you’ve learnt today so should give you the challenge you are looking for.

  2. hello i have finished math and writing i’m just doing reading now and the laptop i am using the time hasn’t been set up properly so i don’t know what time i am doing the work

    1. Thanks, Kyra. You don’t have to stick to the timetable we suggest; it’s just guidance. But if you do want to, is there another clock you could use, perhaps? A phone will have one or perhaps even your TV will show it when switched on if you go into the TV guide section. However, having said all that, if you are doing the learning and spending enough time on it to practise and prove what you’ve learnt, then that’s the most important thing!

  3. Oh I didn’t realise I got it working but hi Miss I have a bit of trouble I couldn’t really do English but I tried so I hope you like it and I hope your family is okayStay well and make sure that you’re all okay but I’m going to carry on with the work but bye

    1. I’m glad you’ve got it working.
To do writing today, you really needed to have done the Monday lesson, so maybe you need to go back and try that if you can.
We’re all good here, thanks, Kiera. Hope you and your loved ones are too.
Good luck with your learning and do drop me a message if I can help in any way!

          1. In fact, Syke, if you log onto Accelerated Reader, you can check for yourself. This way, you can check whenever you want and don’t need to wait for us to reply!
Log in, and click on AR as though you were doing a quiz. In the top-right, there are three icons with words. Select ‘progress’ and you will be taken to the information you want. All the data showing initially is just for this half-term. However, if you click on ‘current marking period’, you can also have a look at your reading for your whole time in Year 6!

        1. Sorry to hear that, Skye.
Did you do yesterday’s writing lesson? That lesson is essential for today’s and I do say at the start of today’s video to make sure you have done the Monday lesson first.
Does that help? Do message back if I can help further.

          1. i have sent some more work to you but I’m no sure if it has sent properly can you check please

          2. I’ve checked and there is work from you in the maths, reading and writing folders – thank you!

    1. You need to spend at least 25 minutes writing. I cannot state exactly how many paragraphs this will be (as it depends on various things, such as how quickly you write and how long your paragraphs are), but for you, I think you could probably write around two-thirds of an A4 page of quality writing in that time :o)
